Velox bar plugs

Before I get creative, are there any tips for getting the smaller star washer to catch on the larger washer when installing Velox bar plugs? So far, the screw keeps spinning and never tightens. I tried using a wrench to tighten the nut down, hoping it might help catch something, but have had no luck.

My next thought is to use something to provide texture to the larger washer.

I try to get them started outside the bars and then install them as a snug fit and finish tightening them.

have installed and removed quite a few of these and have never encountered this symptom

first thought is two possibilities:

either parts assembled in wrong order

or there is damage to the threads of either the screw or nut...or both

As thinktubes said start them outside the bar until you get a pretty snug fit and then it wont spin and will expand out when you turn the screw,

Down in the dungeon at the LBS we keep rubbing alcohol available all the time for easing rubber/metal interfaces. Mostly for getting grips off and back on. For the Velox plugs it could help. Tighten them up nice outside the bars then wet the plug and ease it into the bar. Finish tightening. The alcohol evaporates in an hour or so. The reverse helps too when you want to remove rubber bar ends or mirrors that have been in there quite some time.

I use hairspray for such applications. Bonus for its pleasant smell.

I was born anosmic, so I cannot tell if you are being sarcastic or serious. Is the smell necessary for its effectiveness.

I tried 3 new plugs. I bought 4 new sets, so I guess I could technically check the rest, but those 3 seemed like a sufficient sample.

If you must, get a small disc of sandpaper 80 grit about right and stick it to the back side of the compression washer- punch a hole and assemble- that should add to the friction.

that written- velox plugs were designed for the bar tape to fold into the bar bore, if you are trying to install with nothing... good luck

”Pleasant” is relative to the smeller, I suppose. But the smell is evocative of early memories I have of my mother at one of those old-fashioned beauty parlors back in the day.

Many of us know there isn’t any other use for that stuff in Lerner shop.

Make sure that they tread easily before attempting to install into the handlebar. Snug slightly, insert and tighten. This system has always worked for me...

Have you tried New Shimmer? It's also a dessert topping!

Finger tight and make sure the star washer is not worn smooth. And, as said above, make sure the screw threads easily and not binding.
