Went down hard

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Went down hard

Decided to take a trip and drive from Florida to North Carolina and ride the Blue Ridge area. On the second day there we got to the top of Mount Mitchell at the summit and took a break. Started my ride down, which was a blast, way better then going up hill. Was doing about 39 mph when I saw a turn coming I started to slow down and applied my brakes. I saw some rocks in front of me and tried to avoid them but with no luck I went down. Landed very hard. In fact so hard I broke my clavicle and 5 ribs. Im down for at least 2 months.

Bike also messed up.

Ouch! Sorry to hear of your spill. I went to the North GA mountains this past weekend and climbed Hogpen Gap, one of the steeper climbs in the Tour De Georgia a few years ago. The decents are no joke. I was hammering the brakes the entire way down and still had trouble staying under 35 mph. Hope you heal quickly.

I think guys from Florida and Kansas should be required to sit through a descending powerpoint presentation prior to crossing their respective state lines...

Ouch, the first part of the descent of mt Mitchell is very fast. I watched the corners when I've climbed the last part for that very reason.

I think some people should have a little compassion when a guy has to give up the sport for two months due to an accident.

Take care of yourself and heal quickly. You should be good to go in time the Florida "cycling season" to start.

Never broken a rib, but a 25mph crash going downhill on a longboard left me with a broken clavicle, that sucked... are they putting you in a figure 8 brace or is the not possible with the ribs?

So sorry to read this. One of the guys I ride with is 70-something and he went down hard a couple of weeks ago, breaking 4 ribs. My heart goes out to both of you.

Wow, really sorry to hear about your crash and broken bones! I had my first two wrecks in July and went down hard both times. Cracked new helmets both times but no major issues, lots of bruises, scrapes etc.

Both my crashes were in peloton's at 22+ so I'm not riding with any beginner riders anymore.

Hope you heal quickly and prayers are coming your way.

The ONE positive thing about the figure 8... my posture is a LOT better now It really forces you to pull your shoulders back and stand straight. So... theres that... in no way worth the pain and whatnot, but its at least SOMETHING.

Oh, when you do get back on the bike, so NOT under any circumstance attempt to bunny hop. I did over a speedbump my first time back on the bike, and something about the twisting motion my wrist made had me almost fall straight off the bike into the pavement again when I hit the ground. I was over the recommended wait time, but everything still wasn't quite perfect. Coulda made things much worse if I had re-broken the darn thing.

Broke 5 ribs and caved in the left side of my rib cage a few years back . I was riding by myself and ended up under a tree on someones lawn. Luckily some runners came along since I couldn't get up off the ground. Slept 2 months in a power reclining lift chair , but I made a full recovery at age 55 . So will you. Have a speedy recovery. Frisky
