So after way too much time online, I think I’m gonna go for the Busch & Müller IQ-SX light. Perennialcycle.com has them for 105, shipping probably around 10 bux seems reasonable enough I guess. Any thoughts?
Im planning to re-lace my old rim onto the hub, saving a bit of cash that way. Not really wanting to spend a ton on a light unit (Supernova, Edelux2 ahem) but do want to be able to see on an unlit road on a moonless night...

I think the IQ-SX is probably a good light, but I wish it put out more light.

I am happy enough with it that I recently bought a second one. I like the metal housing. The mounting connection is plastic, but it looks like a really good plastic.

I’m also looking at the IQ-X, but the plastic bracket is putting me off. I really like the stainless bracket of the IQ-SX. Not a huge price difference between them, either.

Edit: yesterday on amazon I saw the IQ-X at 117, the XS at 96. Now the IQ-X lists at 168. Should have bought yesterday!

Go to sick of deliberating back and forth; just placed an order for the IQ-SX from perennialcycle.com for 105with free shipping. We’ll see how it goes!

Looks like I haven’t forgotten how to build wheels:

Bad cell phone pic in very bright sunlight

so - I’ve ordered a headlight but it probably won’t be here til next week sometime. Will I damage this dynamo if I ride it without a light connected to it? What if it spins backwards?
Do these put out AC or DC current?
Apologies for what may sound like dumb questions; as I said before I have zero experience with dynamos of any kind. Thanks !

No problem running the wheel without being hooked up to anything.

Backwards, I am not familiar with your brand, I assume no problem but can't say for sure.

It is an AC alternator, nothing more. No voltage regulation. The headlight includes the rectifier and voltage regulation.

I think you said you are not getting a taillight for it. If you do later, that taillight needs to be hooked up to the headlight, most taillights lack overvoltage protection and rely on the headlight for that.

I'm going to keep calling it a generator, like people have been doing for the last 100 years. "I wired up my magneto last night" "your what?" " you know, generator" "oh"

The 1961 Ford Galaxy that I had to replace the brushes on was a generator, but the 1965 Ford station wagon that needed a rebuilt alternator, that was not a generator. I learned as a kid the difference.

But my 1960s and 70s vintage British motorcycles, the repair manuals called it an alternator but by definition it apparently should have been called a magneto. They only called it a magneto if there was no battery and no rectifier.

Like you, decades later, I am not going to start calling things different names.

Fun fact: In the UK, they're 'dynamos'.

Everything that has been reported here about the Sanyo/Panasonic hubs I find to be accurate. They work, I don't notice the drag and I notice the vibration sometimes, and sometimes I don't. I already had one as part of a wheel set I bought last year for my commuter, and I paired it to a B&M Cyo Premium front and Secula fender-mounted rear.I took advantage of the Soma sale and bought 3 more. I've built wheels with the new hubs for my all-roads bike, my wife's and my son's bikes. On my other bike I have the IQ-X mounted to a rack and the same Secula model for the rear fender. I like that light, it seems to be bright, but I araely see it in action! My wife and son are sporting the Cyo and a B&M Mini Plus tail reflector/light which is a big reflector and a very mini LED.

Lighting gear, plus a few other amusing bits.

So my light came in yesterday (sorry no pics yet), but it was cold out in the garage so it still sits on the coffee table. I wanted silver hubs but they were unavailable when I placed my order. They look so much nicer than the black ones!
Maybe I'll get the light mounted up tonight....

Light came in and installed easily. I ran the wire through the inside of the fork leg to hopefully protect it from damage. First commute with it tomorrow; hope the thing is bright enough!

Wire went in without too much trouble!

Getting it back out the vent hole was a little tricky. Made a drip loop... but I don’t expect I’ll ever ride in the rain

Just a quick update; the light works pretty well, was bright enough for my unlit commute, and is a no brainer. It’s nice not thinking about batteries or whether I’m fast enough to beat battery life. I didn’t notice any extra effort due to the hub, and my time is about what it always is - just over an hour at 16mph average. I’m very pleased with the hub and the light!

Great. And if you built the wheels yourself instead of paying a wheel building fee, that is even better.

So I know this is an oldish thread but I wanted to post a quick update. I've been commuting on average twice a week with this light, occasionally with another, non-dynamo hubbed bike, and can say that hands down a dynamo light is the best investment a serious to semi-serious commuter or transport cyclist can make, hands down. My morning commute is early (3-4am early!) so it is always dark. The IQ-SX puts out plenty of light for my half suburban / half rural 17.5 mile commute, but the beam spread is not super wide, so I miss a bit of what's on the side of the road. No worries for me because at that hour I may only see 3 cars on my ride in, so I usually just ride right down the middle of the road. When I ride my other non dynamo lighted bike I pine for my dynamo, even though the battery light puts out what appears to my eyes to be brighter light. With the dynamo I don't have to think about any lighting requirements at all; its just there and it works always for as long as the bike is moving forward. None of the mental games like how long before the battery dies? or where on earth am I going to carry the battery? (mine is a separate battery/light style) or did I remember to charge the battery? or do I need to get a new battery because my old one is near the end of its service life? Battery this, battery that, blah blah blah. So if you're on the fence about whether or not to take the plunge, I say DO IT! You absolutely will not regret it!

I know. As soon as I got dynamo lights, I wondered why I had waited for so long. That's how good they are.

*bump* to report that I'm a bit over 5000 miles on my Panasonic H27 hub. It's on my beater fixed-gear MTB, so it sees all of the winter riding and most of the rain, yet the bearings and electrics are just fine. It seems like I hardly have to move the wheel for the headlight to start flickering, which is great.

I knew going in that this hub would have more drag than other dyno hubs, but I'm not as weight/efficiency-minded with this bike. And since the drag is hardly different whether the light is on or off, I just leave the light on all the time.

Here's a pic from when I had just built it up in Jan 2018:

Yes, I just leave mine on all the time too. In fact, I think by Christmas I’ll be building up another dynamo wheel to be used on another commuter hybrid I picked up for a song this past summer. Probably use another IQ-SX headlight with it…

As predicted, I built another wheel with this hub to put on my other commuter. Re- using the rim saves a little money, and this time I went for Sapim spokes from wheelbuilding parts.com ($.30 each instead of $.85 for DT). They seem every bit as nice as DT and built into a nice wheel. That savings allowed me to splurge on a Supernova E3 Pure3 light.

Instead of putting it on my 26” mountain bike/commuter I decided my other 700c hybrid commuter would be a better choice. I’m excited to put some time in on this light and compare to my B&M light!
