Hello,

I'm considering buying a Giant Mountain bike (Aluxx 6000 series). Its nothing fancy but I wanted to replace some parts like the shocks, tires etc. to make the bike better quality. I'm not too sure what parts should be replaced and with what parts, I have a 200 CAD dollar budget to spend on parts (but I could always go up a bit if needed). If anyone could suggest some parts that should be replaced it would be very much appreciated.

Why would you upgrade and not just spend the money on a better bike?
ETA: That's very much an entry level bike so $200.00 isn't worth nor will it get you anywhere.

“Aluxx 6000” is not a model name, it’s just Giant’s brand name for aluminum.

$200CAD will probably buy you a nice pair of tires.

What needs replacing? Just don't throw money at it and think it's going to get better.

Just finished tuning up a similar bike for my neighbor. His tires had dry rot. His right shifter was toast. His chain and freewheel were worn out. His cables were rusted in the housing. We fixed and replaced those things that were worn out first. That's his plan. He has a good frame and his the wheels are still true. Next most likely is his crank due to semi-worn crank rings and of course that bottom bracket most likely needs care. He does not mountain bike and I think I have convinced him to go to touring tires and ditch the straight bars. He also expects to go to a regular fork if he has problems with his hydraulics. It's not a pretty bike but it remains a solid kinda of gravel bike now... Ha

He has hands and tools and rebuilds vintage welders for fun.
But now... He has the bug.
Sometimes its not so much the bike but the build. Fun, fun, FUN!

Is the bike new? or used

Zandoval covered things that can go wrong with used bikes, but if its new, just get a couple of tubes, some tire irons, a cycling multi tool, a decent helmet and some cycling shorts (most people give up because of rear end pain - good cycling specific shorts help with that )

I would recommend that before you go upgrading the bike parts, you look at the accessories you will need and some should carries based on the type of riding you will be doing. Some of these items include helmet, spare tubes and/or sealant, tire repair kit. multi tool for minor trail repairs or tweaks, hydration pack and many others. I typically recommend replacing parts on older bikes as they break or to match the type of riding you plan to do, otherwise use some of that money towards common items you will need to be safer and have more fun. If it isn't broken it doesn't need upgraded. Go ride your bike more.

And when you do have to replace, replace with the best part you can afford.

There are mountain bikes with disc brakes starting at $600 US which would be the minimum I would want to buy new. What is seldom appreciated is that a bike component that sells for $100 at the local bike shop costs the bike manufacturer $25. Better to buy a slightly more expensive bike with the components you want then to upgrade later. The only things I want to change or upgrade are the stem and the seat post and the tires.
