Retrofitted 1987 Peugeot Ventoux - Worth it?
Hey all,
I'm looking for a commuter bike and found this 1987 Peugot Ventoux bike. The description is below.
"This is a circa 1987 Peugeot Ventoux that has been built up from a frame. It has a mix of parts and the original 12-speed has been upgraded to a Shimano 600 Tricolor 2x8 drivetrain. The frame is Reynolds 501 cromoly tubing and the fork is a Trek cromoly unit. The bike has fresh bar wrap and all cables and housing are new. This bike has been slimmed down to 23.2 lbs as shown.This bike is equipped with Shimano 600 Tricolor front and rear derailleurs, 600 cranks (170mm), Dia-Compe G 500 side-pull rear brake, Shimano Ultegra front brake, Shimano barcon (bar-end) shifters, Tektro brake levers, Shimano 600 headset, Specialized quill stem, Specialized 40 alloy drop bar, Mavic CXP 21 rims, Shimano 105 hubs, Michelin front tire, Vittoria Rubino 700x23c rear tire and a Selle Italia saddle."
I don't have pictures, but the frame is in very good shape with new handlebar tape and a new seat.
How much do y'all think is worth bidding on it? It's suggested value is $595 which seems steep, but the money goes towards charity...

I think the Ventoux was a mid level bike from Peugeot. The frame might only have 501 main tubes with the rest being Peugeot's HLE tubing. Peugeot skimped a bit on the frame with its lugless construction, and the component group used is just middling in quality.
The asking price is definitely too high. I would estimate the Ventoux's value, in good to mint condition to be more like just around 300 bucks on a good day.
Still a good riding bike for sure, as Peugeot really got their frame geometries perfect on most of their bikes back then,, for a very balanced/stable handling.

Personally, I'd rather donate directly to the charity of my choice than over pay for a bike being sold by charity. This bike is an odd mix for sure. And make sure those bar ends actually index with 8 speed RD. A lot of them were nine speed.
Missing so much, it would drive me nuts. No thanks. The replacement fork alone I would pass, the rest, more so.
Suggested value = delusional.

The replacement fork results in a sloping top tube; modern upgrade for the win!
Just kidding. Not worth the ask in the slightest. Move on - you can find much better uses for your hard earned cash.

@wrk101...
"The replacement fork alone I would pass,,"
That was, for me, an immediate red flag also; I totally agree with wrk101!

Forks don't get lost. Either the bike was crashed, or sometimes forks are replaced for newer carbon forks. Given this isn't one of those, 99% chance this was crashed. Dia Compe rear brake with Ultegra front? At a co-op, that might have saved $20 and is totally inappropriate IMO.

Someone (you?) posted this same bike on r/bicycling. It's funny to see the differences in reaction. On r/bicycling they're gushing over it, calling it a thing of beauty, etc.
