Tested a Pugsley Today

Bike shop let me test ride their Surly Pugsley today. Seriously fun! I was just in the city, but I hopped the highest curbs I could find and it was like riding over a twig. It didn't even feel that slow on pavement, and it really wasn't heavy either. As someone who rides very challenging trails with no interest in speed, I think I am going to save up for this bike. I am still smiling.

$1,500 would be more than the sum total of every bike I have ever owned.

Pugsley is a good quality ride from a reputable company. Can't go wrong there. For a bonus...you can ride sand, snow, and mud with it.

I like the Mukluk, I think the centered 170mm rear is a nice option instead of the offset 135... but geez, man, the cost...

If I had the money, I'd get one!

If you don't mind the weight, then the Pugs is the way to go.

I really want to test one out on the trails and see how it handles. I'm not so much into speed as fun. I want this bike so bad.

If they didn't cost so much I would have one.

my friend sam raced his pugsly in the trans rockies up in canada. loved it. my friend landon got one, put an electric wheel on his, and it's his shuttle bike/electric motorcycle. they are super cool. and you can put a cog on the front tire, so when you are in the back country and you trash your rear derailleur, you flip flop wheels and single speed out instead of pushing the bike out.

for $1,700, they are a pretty reasonable bike.

I don't know what an Endomorph weighs, but I remember pushing a 2.7" wire bead Nevegal on my Komodo and how unpleasant that was...granted, I was trying to keep up with B2B.

edit: the Surly tire weighs about 200g less than the 2.7" Nev at ~1260g.

Rolling around on pavement wasn't bad, but when the trail turns uphill and techy...it was a chore.

I would buy an extra set of wheels for it if I were you. nothing fancy, just xt/rhynolite with some 2.1'ish fast rolling knobs for those days when you know you'll be on pavement or smooth trails. You'd be surprised at how much faster you will go and how many more hrs you will be able to ride by dropping 4-5lbs of rotating weight.

Here's a cheaper alternative: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Fat-Sand-Bik...item53e9790b01

It looks like it has a considerably longer WB. SS. 15, 17, and 20" sizes available.

I've got four bikes, so I think I'm covered. Interesting alternative with that Fat Sand, but it's only $300 cheaper. Of course, it comes with Nexus, and I've always though an interal 8 would be just right on trails since you can shift without pedaling and don't have hardware hanging down. But then again... 40 lbs. The Surly is much lighter, I think.
