I think it starts somewhere around the western border of Nebraska, if I remember right. We were driving across the US on I-80, and when we got to the border between Wyoming and Nebraska it seemed to get REALLY flat, VERY suddenly. Then it stayed that way all the way across.
I thought Nebraska had the most boring scenery I'd ever seen. Then I drove across South Dakota on I-90.

When we moved out here from Cleveland my mother thought those big "bumps" sticking out of the ground were weird.

100 or higher here for the foreseeable future. Friends are talking about driving to the next valley tomorrow where it will be a little less hot and we won't have to climb back into our valley at the end.

Luckily, it’s gonna cool down to the upper 50’s tonight and should be in the 60’s and 70’s for tomorrow’s century. The predicted high is 80.
I am cool with that.

they also make excellent hiking food for the very same reason. very good weight to energy ratio as well, which is important when you are carrying everything on your back.

This is a big part of the reason I've been trying to get together with my friend who lives near Sullivan Canyon. It's always WAY cooler out there than the SGV. Tomorrow, however, I'm stuck riding local. Going to try to get a couple hours in the dirt before 10am.

we call them chips. same as the hot fried potato chips. If you go somewhere that sells both a scoop of chips is the hot ones, a bag of chips are the cold ones.
Mostly better. I was lucky, for me it was just like a moderate cold with a bit of extra fatigue and chest tightness early on.

I used to stop at what was then a bike-friendly Chevron station in Woodside and grab a Snickers and a quart of Gatorade after 40-50 miles for the 15 mile ride home through a Suburban Food Desert. This was after that time that I passed that same station feeling slightly peckish and bonked hard with 3 miles to get home, nobody at home to pick me up, and no cell phone to call them with even if I'd wanted to.

It always does. The beauty of the bonk. Everything's fine and then suddenly it's not.

I can do one geal but the second leaves me feeling the need for something in my belly. These days that's a banana. I can eat two, spaced apart, without one of them becoming soup before I get to it.

Instead, I'll probably drive to Simi and ride with a small group to the west and back. At least we won't have to climb Santa Susana pass at the end. Always a tough finish on a hot day.
