Sirius Xm has a Beach Boy channel to which I have started to listen. What a great time for Rock and Roll and to be in high school in the Midwest into cars, girls, sports and music.

I did not have a T-Bird but a 64 Mustang.


And there was the 409. Muscle cars were in vogue and The Beach Boys loved to sing about cars.

I've had the 2nd movement of Borodin's String Quarter No 2 stuck in my head lately/ So lovely. Not sure if anyone has seen the (Disney/Pixar????) short to the classic tale of "The little match girl". It's beautiful and depressing, and this is the perfect track.

Most of my trainer music (rarely listen on the road) is of the angry rock or bumping bass with a good beat variety with a few exceptions. While the genres vary widely, what a lot of them have in common is a tempo that pushes me forward. One of the exceptions to the above (though it has a great tempo) is Nina Simone's Sinnerman. Something about it just puts me in a zen place for longer climbs or sustained efforts. Rather than trying to get energy to fight through the pain by hearing about losing myself or bodies hitting the floor or whatever, Sinnerman just takes me to a place where I don't think about the pain.

Since I had to move my piano for the termite work, when I moved it back, I rotated it 90 degrees so that the lid when open faced the room. What a difference in acoustics. I can hear the tiniest change in voicing. And much of my teachers critiques was that she did not hear certain notes distinguished from others.

Well, just because I can hear it does not mean that I can do it. The corollary to that is: if one cannot hear a difference then one will not improve.

My mom asked me to practice the Violin line for this so we can play it during Christmas with the extended family. Fortunately for me, this one will take about 20-30 minutes of practicing, versus that much bigger Schubert Rondo that I have still yet to learn the duet part for (#shame). My site reading is good enough on the piano to be able to just do this off the cuff, but i'll give it a few listens and practice it a bit so it sounds sharp.

I've been practicing more Xmas tunes than usual with my jazz group. Our drummer was busy last night, but I polished things up with my guitar player for a holiday party that we will perform at this Saturday. The set list includes:

O tannenbaum (<--- swung, Charlie Brown style)
Rockin Around the Xmas Tree
My Favorite Things (<--- also a year-round jazz std)
Silver Bells
Jingle Bell Rock (<--- basically the same song as Rockin' Around)

And a few others. We have some little arrangements we've worked out and rehearsed, so it should be fun. I will likely play solo for a little while after in case people want to sing, as I can accompany and/or play melody (if needed) for most songs in the Real Book. On my own - I particularly enjoy "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", "Oh come, all ye faithful", and "Angles We Have Heard on High".



I have some Vince Guaraldi transcriptions of "Christmas Time is Here" and "What Child is This/Greensleeves" from the Charlie Brown album that I've had up my sleeve for many years as well. Those are always a hit.

Believe it, or not (I do), Christmas is about an event in history and while the weather is always a nice topic, I like the classic Christmas songs the best.

That said - we will be in cold and maybe snow this Christmas. I have just loaded one of my amps in the car and have others already there. We will pretty much play the mix you have listed.

I have these Altec 604B Hollywood speakers in CO. I run them from a Pilot 232 amp which sounds just great. Recently a Facebook audio guy mentions he just found some new, not tested new, but NEW original 6SN7 "bad boy" tubes. I bought some. They sounded so good with that new wine, I wanted to test on the big system. We leave tomorrow. So 50's tubes with a 40's input tube into Czeck (new) power tubes driving late 40's (most likely 50's) speakers via a nice digital to analog source in the nicely setup and sound trapped garage.

While we work on the TT bike - in the snow (we hope).



Right orange box has tubes. Got the S-Works Di2 (older) TT bike, a Cary Amp for the Altec 604Bs and a few cases of real good wine.

I have a friend that is a great guitar player. One night he was playing Hendrix's Little Wing on my 1957 Gibson ES 125 guitar and it was awesome. He said that it took him a long time to get the high E string to "sing" like Jimi did and I said to him "Jimi played a guitar strung for a righty left handed. It was EASY for him to get the high E string to sing."

It was a "Doh" moment for him.

So much of Hendrix is hard to play because it is all backwards.
