Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Nothing Blue: Daughter’s Bike

This all began as many do with a frame:

The initial vision was for a granddaughter, but years and years of wait to fit even this small woman sized Terry frame made for 650c wheels.

So what to do? My oldest step-daughter came to mind as the only daughter/step-daughter I had not built a bicycle for. She runs, but…there comes a day in running when the knees, hips, ankles and back hurts, sure you can walk, but after speed and distance…so this bike is for that day that she may have distance, speed and freedom.

And yes, the color changes you see are the colors in this paint brought out by the changes in the light falling on it.

And something borrowed. That lovely Reynolds 631 frame in its wonderful paint that changes colors with the changing angle of the light that falls upon it as you can see in the changing color due to changing light in the pictures in this post.

Finally I’ll be writing up the owner’s manual for her bike, my thoughts on its creation and a little ancient history on “Isis” one of the great goddesses of the pantheon of the gods of the Pharos, to help her put down any snide remarks.

Thanks all, take care.

VERY nice. I was thinkin about 631, how it's strong and its light,
I was thinkin about Imron how it changes in the light

"I was thinkin’ about turquoise, I was thinkin’ about gold
I was thinkin’ about diamonds and the world’s biggest necklace
As we rode through the canyons, through the devilish cold
I was thinkin’ about Isis, how she thought I was so reckless"

Like the bike a lot. Love the song Mr. Dylan.

Thanks easyupbug and Prowler.

Prowler which song by Dylan are the lyrics from? I will add them to my "Owner's Manual" for this bike, thanks.

Passed a final make/break test last night-will it fit? You eyeball these things, as to measure is to give away the surprise.

Daughters mom, aka as wife/tandem stoker, was able to throw a leg over the seat and stand over the frame (a little tippy toe) and reach the bars without feeling strain in the back!

Daughters got longer legs than mom and an inch or two in height so all should be well.

Found it "Isis" by Bob Dylan and added to the "Owner's Manual":

Isis

Song by Bob Dylan

I married Isis on the fifth day of may
But I do not hold on to her very long
So I cut off my hair and I rode straight away
For the wild unknown country where I could not go wrong

I came to a high place of darkness and light
The dividing line ran through the center of town
I hitched up my pony to a post on the right
Went in to a laundry to wash my clothes down

A man in the corner approached me for a match
I knew right away he was not ordinary
He said, are you lookin' for somethin' easy to catch?
I said, I got no money he said, that ain't necessary

We set out that night for the cold in the north
I gave him my blanket, he gave me his word
I said, where are we goin' he said we'd be back by the fourth
I said, "that's the best news that I've ever heard

I was thinkin' about turquoise, I was thinkin' about gold
I was thinkin' about diamonds and the world's biggest necklace
As we rode through the canyons, through the devilish cold
I was thinkin' about Isis, how she thought I was so reckless

How she told me that one day we would meet up again,
And things would be different the next time we wed,
If I only could hang on and just be her friend
I still can't remember all the best things she said

We came to the pyramids all embedded in ice
He said, "there's a body I'm tryin' to find
If I carry it out it'll bring a good price
'Cause then that I knew what he had on his mind

The wind it was howlin' and the snow was outrageous
We chopped through the night and we chopped through the dawn
When he died I was hopin' that it wasn't contagious
But I made up my mind that I had to go on

I picked up his body and I dragged him inside,
Threw him down in the hole and I put back the cover
I said a quick prayer and I felt satisfied
Then I went back to find Isis just to tell her I love her

She was there in the meadow where the creek used to rise
Blinded by sleep and in need of a bed,
I came in from the east with the sun in my eyes
I cursed her one time then I rode on ahead

She said, where ya been, I said, no place special
She said, you look different I said, well, yes
She said, you been gone I said, that's only natural
She said, you gonna stay I said, if you want you me, yeah

Isis, oh, Isis, you mystical child
What drives me to you is what drives me insane
I still can remember the way that you smiled
On the fifth day of may in the drizzlin' rain

It's all about journey and starting at six, bicycles have taken me there.

Very nice build! I'm bummed because I have a bike languishing in the basement that I had assembled for my daughter. We rode on and off for a summer, but she decided that cycling just wasn't her "thing." So there it sets. May have to find the appropriate thread here to post a few photos and see if anyone might want to part with a few coins for it!

Thanks all its been a very fortunate morning of serendipity "Isis" lyric recommendation and patience.

I just installed heart rate cycle computer on my 72 Nishiki Professional set up for the winter on the bike trainer and HURRAY, got speed, distance and heart rate readings first try without any fiddling.

A very good morning indeed.

All within easy reach of my headphone cables-ROCK ON!

Thanks tyler, you never know how things will work out, but as I'll tell her, after you try it, you have to try it, if it's really not for you, then find someone who wants to ride and pass it on.

Hmm. I wonder if Dylan's Isis is Joan Baez? He didn't seem to trouble much thought to the women in his life, but of course she was special.

Same thing happened to me...she decided not to take it away to college with her, and then moved to the opposite coast for grad school...I eventually got sad and sold it cheap to the nice daughter of a friendly neighbor.

Thanks Tengrainbread, she's ridden a bike in the past and mentioned it was fun, so there's reason for hope.

But in urban California where she lives, she'll need a buddy or follow the never out of sight rule as this bike also just scream "steal me". The sad truth about nice bikes.

Thrashing around in my odds n ends box I found a Morph G pump and its under water bottle holder with a velcro tie to keep it snug, one less accessory she will need.

A good morning.

One way to find buddies is to check out local bike shops..... a number of the them in the san jose area where i am at, have group rides for various riding speeds and many have a woman's ride

Thanks squirtdad I'll include this in her "Owner's Manual" as a means to find both local rides for beginners and a great way to keep her bike safe.

I'm going to see if a LBS where she lives would be willing to accept me sending the boxed bike to them so it isn't left out where she lives, so they could put it back together and do a fitment of the bike for her and provided a seat bag, tire levers, bike bell which I'll pick up as part of her gift bike, and maybe a quick demo of how to change a bike tire.

If they can then I'll also encourage her to plumb their knowledge on local rides, riding groups, clubs.

Thanks

Sorry Korina already taken between four daughters (three step, but that doesn't count to me, they're daughters) and four grand daughters....I'm pretty much taken.

But will share a wisdom from the woman's hut learned early on.

On football weekends with a living room full of women, if you turn off the sound and leave the picture on while keeping absolutely still, you know prey animal surrounded by Alpha predators, your game changes from an annoyance into a wall furnishing.

Now with granddaughters not so well, they are prone to gallop My Little Ponies across you at all times.
