60/61 Raleigh Lenton GP

Hello everyone,

found this some months ago but have not been able to get to refurbishing it yet. Pictures show as found. I believe either 1960 or 1961 Raleigh Lenton Grand Prix - the last if the line. Here are a few pictures. It’s quite compete. Sadly the front wheel is a replacement ( sturmey archer rim w/ sturmey small flange Hub but correct size rim) but otherwise intact and all other parts present. Original front wheel would be Dunlop special lightweight w/ one piece alloy racelite hub which i am looking for. My intention is to completely tear down, clean, wax, repack all bearings , replace tires and cables/housings, bar tape, and leave completely stock. I know the Benelux is not going to behave like other more modern derailleurs and that’s fine. regarding Benelux, one of the lever adjustment knobs is missing the “Benelux” disk. If you have or know of one I would be interested in buying, trading, etc. the left side lever is bent but I think I can bend it back once I get is apart. Also missing One of front acorn axle nuts and “GB” blue caliper nut and one brake hood. Appreciate any help on these. I know stem is too high; I would definitely not ride like this. Thanks in advance.

Lovely machine! Never seen the chrome accents on the fork bridge before. Does your BB have an grease port? My 60-61 Raleigh Gran Port does. It took awhile to find a front Racelite hub for mine.

please keep up the reports and pics when you make progress!

Wow that is nearly complete and original, and in very decent condition! I have the frame, handlebars, and a few parts of an earlier model, about 1958--the model that came with the earlier decal set and the "suicide" shifter. No hope of restoring mine to anything close to original, but you are almost there! The rust on yours looks superficial and should clean nicely. Your decals look in great shape too, treat them gently, no harsh detergent or abrasive. Oh, why replace the bar tape, it looks great in the pics and perhaps original too....

It’s beautiful! I hope that stem comes out of there okay. At least it’s not slammed all the way in so it shouldn’t have far to go.

Very nice! Looks like the original half step 49-46 / 14-16-18-20-22 gearing, as well, and original mudguards, to boot. I presume the horizontal "531" denotes plain gauge tubing, as opposed to a mixed tubeset frame, but the seat post diameter can sort that out for us.

Hello everyone, thanks for kind words. No oil port in BB. I believe bar tape not original as should have had white cloth tape but correct me if wrong. I believe Williams half step crank original. Really surprised how well mudguards preserved as they feel flexible w/o any cracks and not dried out and brittle like those on my 50’s bikes. I will be very careful regarding transfers and will only use dawn or car soap on paint. I’m considering using some water based White paint so not permanent on head tube. I believe cable housing should be white not earlier grey - let me know. Many thanks.

John, how should that seatpost indication work in this case? Don’t we need to know the gauge that was actually used for the seat tube? At least for my 1952 Rudge clone of the Super Lenton (with Sturmey-Archer AW) the seat tube diameter is 25.2 mm and I installed a Kalloy aluminum post that is 25.3 mm. The tube OD is 28.6 mm. These two frames look so similar that I’d assume the seat tubes are also the same.

Looks like the bike I outed last year on CL in the "Are you looking.." thread. If so, glad to see it in good hands! The fender line with clearance for snow is the tip-off.
