Stony Valley Rail Trail, Dauphin -- just north of Harrisburg

Stony Valley Trail. Beautiful deep-woods trail along the lovely Stony Creek starting just outside of the town of Dauphin, a few miles north of Harrisburg, my beloved home town. About 20 miles of trail. You must drive a mile or two on a very rutted dirt road to reach the trail head parking lot. I drive it fine in my BMW coupe, albeit at very low speed. If you start in Dauphin, you have a gentle uphill most of the way, and are rewarded with 20 miles of somewhat downhill on the way back. Careful in deer hunting season. Wear orange. Treat yourself to grilled octopus at the Stony Valley Inn following your ride. It sits at the dam where Stony Creek tumbles into the mighty Susquehanna. 28s are marginal. 32s better. 35s very pleasant. 38s probably overkill. Ride your own ride. Choose your own tires.

gravelmap.com SE Pennsylvania area (the URL includes the map location, so you can bookmark any view.) click on a yellow road to see the name and mileage.

This map is a wiki, anyone can post a route. Some of these are rough forest roads, others are smooth rail trails, and anything in between.
