Re-reading this I find myself really regretting giving away my Trek 560 bought new in 1988, given to a bike-less friend in 2000. I wonder if he still has it...

This issue was a good one.
Raleigh and Cannondale were the two other companies featured in this Aug 1986 issue, so look for reviews about each and one of their bikes over the next few days.

It wasn't a single machine, it was a series of machines, each dedicated to a specific joint. Fixturing for each machine was size and model specific, which would limit custom geometries.

There's a lot of interesting statements in that article!
I guess what I *know* of Trek is that it was all upward and onward- that there was no stumble, hesitation or anything anywhere in there- Of course, that can't be the truth- and of course I wasn't paying any attention at the time. And this also sort of explains some of those bikes with the bad chain stay bridges- more of an automation foul up rather than a "day after a night of drinkin' at the Pyramid Supper Club."
