Pinarello Montello.1984
Bike available by me . Has Columbus SLX frame but equipped with Shimano 600 group set. Can this be correct? Is it a Pinarello built in Japan.? Any input would be appreciated. Seller is stating it was his Grandfathers bike. I am believing him. More questions to follow. Thanks in advance. Going to look at it on Sunday.

I know of no vintage Pinarello that was built in Japan. However, many Pinarello bikes came factory equipped with Shimano components. Including my old Pinarello Stelvio with its Shimano 105 and RSX components.

It could have been bought as a frame and built up in the shop with Shimano. I dont recall seeing anything but Campy in the catalogs of that vintage.
You will find a serial number stamped into the underside of the bottom bracket. That will give a good indication of year. Frame and fork have the same serial number.
To make sure it's a legit Pinarello, look for the cast name in the bottom bracket and the various "bird" and GP pantographs in the lugs.
To make sure it's a Montello, the dead giveaway is the bridgeless bottom bracket with the wings on the top side into the seat tube. The top tube has internal cable routing (which is a nightmare - there's no internal tube for it, although maybe there's some sort of guide to help ramp it back towards the outlet).
Fork should be fully chromed. Frame is chromed along the seat and chain stays, within a few inches of the lugs of the main triangle. Actually, the frame is fully chromed under the paint. If the paint isn't chipped and the decals mostly missing, it's been repainted. As built, there is no clearcoat and decals dry out and flake off over time - I learned this in '94 when I grabbed my '87 by the seat tube and big chunks of decal came off in my hand.

Thanks cb400bill I'm thinking you are correct. The Pinarello I'm looking at is in nice shape but I think a little expensive at a price point of $1000.00 I'm going to check it out on Sunday. Looks good in photos ( but then what doesn't). Thanks again

Thanks CyclingFool95 So far this bike checks all the boxes . Except not campy equipped. Then again Shimano 600 group set not that bad.

Could you sell the 600 groupset by itself and use the profits to buy a campy-equipped donor bike (size and condition of the frame don't matter)?

@Velometry - I have a lat 80's Montello that came with 8 speed DA (740x) and a Campagnolo HS.
As purchased used. I heard that Pinarello offered DA in response to demand at that time. Previously, Campagnolo was the offering.

I have owned 4 Pinarello bikes. Two had Campy components and two had Dura Ace. Most of the Italian bikes I own/owned have come with Dura Ace.

Thank you everyone for your expertise. I went to look at bike today unfortunately the frame is a few cm. too tall for me and my 30 inch inseam. However it is a great project bike for anyone interested in a medium sized Pinarello Montello SLX frame . paint is very nice chrome 6-7/10 shimano 600 group set. Thanks again.
