Help riding in Tuscany

Hi all, I'm looking to plan a casual bike tour around Tuscany in January (Florence to Rome) Does anyone have experience in Tuscany/Lazio? We are going to bring our own bikes which are pretty bare bones commuter bikes and plan on 40-50km a day. Are there dedicated bike or hiking roads to use? Is it *too* hilly for a single speed? Any advice would help: routes, itineraries,....

Thanks!
Sarah

Hi Sarah!

I live in Siena for 2 years and I can not tell you how much I love this place! By the way, if you are looking for a guided tour, you can try https://bikeridingtuscany.com/ . They were really helpful to me and made me discover the best part of Tuscany. Definitely give them a try!

I remember riding in riverside county california and some of the roads there require going uphill for some distance of maybe at least 1 mile or two before getting to a flatter grade. I remember shifting down to 1st or second gear when climbing. Recent rides up some hills with a single speed cruiser that i borrowed from a friend has me wondering how i would do with the same ride on some other roads i traveled before.

I recommend a bike with multiple speeds and specifically with climbing gears along with higher gears for cruising on flatter ground.

On some days i biked over 10 miles in a single trip. Sometimes i wanted to try going somewhere i was not at before to check it out. If 16kms is about equal to 10 miles than i think 50kms in a day is doable with a decent bike and managable terrain for it.Take a liter or 2 of water and something to eat for getting hungry after the ride. EDIT

INVEST IN THORN RESISTANT TIRES OR INNER TUBES. I DO NOT KNOWETH IF THERE ARE THORNS WHERE YOU PLAN TO RIDE IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN THERE ALREADY. I REMEMBER RIVERSIDE GIVING ME FLAT TIRES IN SOME PLACES OFTEN. I TRIED THE TUBES ADVERTISED AS BEING THORN RESISTANT ON THE MESA WHEN I GOT IT AND I WENT A RECORD YEAR AND A HALF WITHOUT A FLAT BUT THAT WAS NOT TESTED IN RIVERSIDE BUT IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY. DIFFERENT PLANTS THERE AS I REMEMBER.
