rim joint not opposite valve hole

Just noticed on a pair of rims - Weinmann 27x 1 1/4" - that the welded joint is not opposite the valve hole; they're both 36 hole rims; one has 16 spokes from joint to hole, one has 9.

Dammit.

Now I have to go look at all the other rims too.

What an unsettling development.
next you’re going to tell me that when you look through the valve hole of the built-up wheel you see the back of your head!

Didn't you know they balanced them at the factory?

(if anyone is reading this ten years from now, that is a joke and I'm no authority on forty now, fifty at your reading year old wheels)

So, let's say you worked in the Weinmann factory some years ago and you're just back from lunch on a Friday and you think, "Time to mess with a few heads in the future. I wonder how long it'll take until someone notices this."

With the rarity of rim supply nowadays, I'd be happy to get one with the number of holes divisable by 4...

Isn’t the title of the thread backwards? I mean, once you say, “the valve hole isn’t opposite the rim joint,” it doesn’t sound so bad, does it?

Letting @oneclick know he's not alone with this rim thing, I dug out my only-est Weinmann-rimmed bike to check out this non-diametrical inconsistency. This little bike is a Condor made in Switzerland and is a ladies' 3-speed with 700C alloy rims, the non-dimpled Weinmann 210. The OP did not provide a pic or model of his own rims but they could well be the same model in 27". Lots of bikes wore these back then.

With the tires deflated I went around the circumference of each rim until I found the ground part that should indicate the finished joint weld. Did not bother to remove the tire, tube and rim strip for better pix but trust me, my thumb is adjacent to the joint and you can see that the valve stem on each wheel it not exactly opposite. This must be a thing but I ain't gonna lose sleep over it.

The ones I have are simple U-shaped plain alloy, have a pair of little boxes in the corners and brass eyelets; stamped "Weinmann" and "Made in Belgium" and "16 x 630 - 27 x 1 1/4"".

Please send all of these defective rims to me for safe disposal.

Jokes aside, box section, raised section, or drop center?

The cross-section is a U with boxes in the corners, the spoke bed is single-wall.

At this point someone will probably suggest you cut one open for a good cross-section photo.
