Midwest farm town, I feel like there are no opportunistic bike thieves here, eg. you see cheap bikes leaned against the wall outside the corner store or fast food place, those are people who have a DUI or are kids or whatever, and then everyone else is driving a car everywhere; yesterday I actually saw a Walmart MTB locked to a six foot cement pole with a cable lock, like you could just lift the thing up and take it if you wanted, coming from Chicago it gave me a little laugh

UC Davis. They have reverse bike theft. If someone steals your bike, they will leave two in its place. Usually of greater value. That's how I got my yellow Botechia.

Maybe homogenous very high income areas are less likely to have bike theft issues. Disclaimer: Just a hypothesis to test not a fact.

It depends on the bike. Friends using their bikes on university campuses would paint them flat black and remove items like a front derailleur and rear brake and use a cheap saddle to make their bikes less attractive to thieves and it worked for them.

We have such widespread poverty with hundreds of thousands of families living in tents and a Federal Reserve that has stated that it is raising interest rates to get unemployment up to 5% (which translates to 10% for people of color and 25% for young people). The problem is not bike theft but wage theft.
