Snobbery is a state of mind, whilst Fred is a state of being. They are orthogonal.

How would you score someone, like me, who couldn't give a rat's ass how anyone perceives him and doesn't label himself? I just ride what I want, the way I want. And I don't care what anyone else rides or does with their ride.

Totally off the scale, but can’t figure which end. But then numbers are just a construct.
On the Fred scale, I will give myself 5ive Freds

I had to Google what a Fred is just now.
I suppose that's me
I wear a tee shirt and cycling shorts and I don't own a helmet at present
I've never had a use for cycling gloves and I don't own any piece of gear with "sponsorship" stuff on them. I don't have cycling specific sunglasses.
I don't do group rides or Strava either.
I also don't really care what someone rides or how they dress, so long as they can ride competently and safely when they're near me.
But, my bike is well maintained and immaculate and professionally fitted to me, and I do have clipless pedals with a nice pair of Lake shoes on order (Sidi at present but they don't fit me properly, unfortunately)
I have bib shorts, and I prefer bib shorts, but they're just black, like most of the tee shirts I wear.
So if you're in OC and you see a Fred with no helmet and a heavy metal tee shirt or a Green Bay Packers tee shirt... say hello! But I probably won't hear you, because I am listening to music.
I have no idea where that puts me on the scale.

https://bikeparts.fandom.com/wiki/Fr...%2C000%20miles.
In the UK, an early usage of the word is the more common—used by 'serious' roadies to refer to (often) bearded, sandal-wearing, touring cyclists without any high-tech gear.[
] This usage still survives in the US. David Bernstein, presenter of The FredCast says the term is "used by 'serious' roadies to disparage utility cyclists and touring riders, especially after these totally unfashionable 'freds' drop the 'serious' roadies on hills because the 'serious' guys were really posers."

This pic of my old Fuji is full of 'Fred'-ness little details:
Other examples of Fred-ness is my attire - Hi-vis wicking T-shirt, short-inseam hiking shorts (Pockets!!!), Hi-vis lime yellow helmet, ankle socks, normal athletic shoes, drugstore Polarized sunglasses
I happily rode this old Fuji exclusively until just a few years ago, tens of thousand of miles. Then BF.net came around and polluted my mind... and infected my thoughts with 'n+1'
.
- '75 Fuji S-10S -- a 45-yr old steel bike - and 'gas pipe' at that
- Japanese -- not Italian, French or even English
- Pletscher rear rack - and it has been on there since 1977
- If one were to look closely at the far right of the pic, you'll see white reflective tape wrapped around the rack stay...
- Bike Warehouse rack support
- Tire Savers
- Dual stay-mounted rear reflectors
- Crochet-back cycling gloves clamped on rear rack
- Original DiaCompe center-pull brakes (modern brake pads though)
- 27" clincher wheels/tires
- scratched paint
- Owned it since new - not bought as a 'beater'
