Dented Rim makes me lame or cool?
I recently hit a nasty lip in the road and put a small in dent in my month-old velocity deep V rim. It's barely visible and doesn't effect riding but I can feel it thumping lightly when I brake. My local mech just whacked it with a ball peen hammer a few times and took a bit of the thump out. I'm going to bring it to another shop, but I assume that I'll always feel some difference when braking. Should I just live with it or consider replacing? Would that make a dummy riding a busted wheel? Or a hard-riding veteran who doesn't baby his gear and has some dings to show for it?

Without pictures it is hard to say but generally yeah if you equipment is broken or damaged I probably wouldn't ride it. If it is effecting the functionality of your bike it probably isn't so safe.

Rims never go back to perfect when you dent the sidewall, did that a number of times to a pair of velocity aeroheats before deciding that 19c tires were stupid when I also used the bike to commute. Always just took a hammer and a piece of plywood and hammered it flat from the outside using the board in the rim to help find flat and give something to hammer against. I would follow it with a couple of quick swipes with a metal file to get rid of the bump on the outside of the rim. Under light braking the dents were always a little noticeable, under hard braking they weren't. Rims lasted till the dents disappeared from the brakes wearing out the sidewalls so I think its probably fine if it didn't flat spot the rim.

Buy another rim. Replacement is easy if it's the exact same rim. Tape the new one against the old one and just transfer the spokes over one by one.

Back in my mountain bike racing days (rim brake era), I don’t know if I had a single wheel that didn’t have some kind of dent in it. If the thump bugs you, replace it. But I’d wait until you get at least two dents, just to save a little money in the interim.

My Surly has so many scrapes and dents on it. If I had to replace the frame every time, I'd have like 15 of them.
