Cannondale M300

‘94 M300. When I got it it was in pretty good shape, but bars and stem had been replaced as had the shifters. I loved the ride and have taken it in some pretty rough stuff. After abusing it for a few years I figured it was time for an upgrade. Brand new Deore v brakes, Tektro “4 finger” levers (I like a lot of real estate on my levers), vintage Deore thumbies, Deore LX RD, new cables, Deore wheelset….the only thing stock on it now is the FD and cranks (even the seat post collar is new). As an aside, I really like the Easton Monkey Bars it came with.

I like this C’dale so much I’ve been on the lookout for an M1000 in my size and a similar year for a few years now, with no luck….

Stubborn bb and headset removed. Washed, waxed and ready to build once parts arrive.

BEFORE in decent cosmetic condition

I know this is stretching vintage and classic quite a bit - but the frame is nearly 20 years old... ;-)

Been building this 2003 De Rosa Planet (aluminium frame with carbon rear stays and front fork) for a while. My most modern bike and I originally bought it (cheap) to get some parts from it (10V Chorus ergopower - for their aluminium handles) - and planned to sell the "leftovers". But then I took a look in my parts stash and realized I had the right stuff to complete it. And I actually like the bike! Totally out of my comfort zone but/and it is nice to build something else than what I usually build.

10V Record all thru but for the rear hub that is Chorus. It will probably be finished tomorrow - adding black bar wrap, a black Ciussi bottle holder and Record pedals.

Dirty ergopower

Clean Ergopower

Before picture (I have put on a longer stem of the same make and model - as can bee seen above).

Well, like you, well out of my comfort zone but I do have a couple of modern bikes and frames that will get built/finished someday.

In the meantime I wholly applaud your acumen with the Pandora's box that are the shifters. So far, I can get them mounted, cabled and dialed in but I have some on my favorite rider that have to be way overdue for a cleaning, overhaul, etc. Pretty sure they should have azzploded already. They will probably be toast by the time I get there.

Experimental no longer Fuji

Some are probably thinking "again?". My long on going Fuji Ace project has been finalized. In the end, I'm real pleased with the outcome. The process to get here? I know I put much more difficulty into it than necessary. I decided to start building it yesterday, having had it sitting in my enclosed rear deck in the daytime, my bike work room at night, for 6 or 7 days to give the finish some time. I got a bit done yesterday evening, and had it ready for a quick 2 mile ride around the neighbor mid afternoon. I had a bit of tweaking to do, which I am pretty sure got finished just a short time ago.

Finish is Rustoleum Smoky Grey Enamel rattle can. Mostly black components with a little white, grey and silver bits mixed in. I have some decals on the way. The only thing original on this bike is the material used for the frame set. It maxes out fitting most 32 mm tires. I think the best decision I made was spreading the rear drop outs to 130 mm. I did that this morning with a home made spreader I had used once before. It spread just fine and measured at 130.3.
I could no longer deal with spreading it by hand to get the wheel in and out.

I finished a couple bikes and am feeling kinda wrenched out lately, so unless something really clean and cheap pops up on FB no more bikes for a while.

First is a GT Edge I took in on behalf of my local co-op. There's a thread with more pictures in the brifter bike forum, but I wanted to show it off cuz it's PRETTY.

And second, a low-mileage but dusty 1986 Schwinn Le Tour. I'm a sucker for mid/late 80s Schwinns. Once again disassembled and regreased everything, put on new cables and bar tape and am really excited to ride it when the weather turns. First bike I've had with Stronglight cranks and a Sachs-Huret group (the granddaddy to today's Rival groupset haha), so I'm going to keep it stock for a while. I still can't get over how RED the paint is, the photos don't really do it justice but there was too much slush outside.

After

Finished the De Rosa today. Significant weight reduction (not that it matters as I am the limiting factor...)

The before weight 8,55 kg:

After - 7,9 kg - as it stands with pedals and bottlecage!

Looking forward to spring (april/may here) and to take it for a spin - and to take some natural light pictures. The yellow is much more vibrant in natural light.

Had to have something really vintage on it and these fit the bill.

Haven't really done much beyond cleaning it a little since picking it up. Seat needs replacing. Chain, RD and cranks got removed yesterday for some servicing soon, then the wheels will be replaced. Debating about turning it into a 1x10 or 2x10 with SRAM TT shifters as bar ends and some Tektro/Cane Creek ergo-shaped brake levers.

Nice job - not many people seem to have the desire (or skill set) to take these things apart and put them back together. Having done it twice myself, I can kinda understand why

Working on the Schwinn Peloton...Got the wheels built and started hanging parts...The seat post and seat are trash. I'm using them for bike stand hangage. Not too sure about the mustache bars either. I might go straight bar.

I took this abused fork to work with me so I could use a big, flat steel table in the shop with a Wilton vise during my lunch break. The only problem I had with it was guys came out of the woodwork when they saw me in the shop. They were all well intentioned but too eager to offer hammers, cheater bars and even torches. It may not be within factory tolerances, but it is no longer intolerable.

It did take some foul language... to get them back together again - as there were three washers that looked very similar but had different thicknesses.
I have always wanted to take things apart to get to know how they work. It started early and it has been a theme ever since. Engines, gearboxes, watches, etc. I seem to get it back together again - as of yet... What makes things easier today compared with when younger are 1/ experience and 2/ using a mobile camera for every little step.

Very much the same here, these just aren't on that list yet, and may not be for quite some time.

My Dad was a pretty good wrench and I can still remember "helping and supervising" him when I was about 3 years old. Fortunately I inherited that gene from him and it has served me very well too, made most of my living with it, saved a lot of $$$ along the way fixing things myself and won a ton of drag races. win, win, win.

Wrenching on today…..

Guy brought me an 85/86? Klein. He stalked it a bit, picked it up with wheels, press-fit BB, too-long slammed stem and tarnished bars. He just said “build it cheap.”

First issue was a reamed out 3TTT clamp bolt. An SAE tweener-sized hex wrench solved that.

I had no idea what this was, other than a headset.

It needed work.

Bottom race was not as bad.

Hours later, my parts bin has no stem, no saddles, very little other stuff.

54 x 56 FranKleinbike will go back to the owner tomorrow. 48-hour turnaround.

Headset unknown, possibly a Stronglight. Unk stem, 90mm. 3TTT Forma bars (because I have no others.)

BB was with the frame, so I was stuck with that. I had one and only one, a 600EX-like 110BCD with 50/34 rings.

I picked up a Claris FD/RD/cassette from CL a while ago, so the 12-32 cassette will do (also my only 8-sp).

To move the $8 KMC chain is a set of Sachs shifters. An SR Laprade post, also my last 27.2.

My last non-carbon saddle, as well, robbed from a de-bike in progress, Bontrager Maestro.

105 calipers from a Terry that going uptown. DTSwiss 240 hubs came with the frameset, unknown rims.

The Gatorskins we’re also already there. Cables and housing are used and leftovers, respectively.

Used wrap over gel padding and an orphan Asia-Con cage end it.

After two successful swap meets, I’m out of parts not already needed. Period.
I cannot even build all the frames I have.
That’s a good thing.
I think.

Just finished this last night. This is only temporary so I have something to ride. When the repair stand my wife got me gets here Thursday I'll be putting the gravel drops back on with a SRAM Apex 1 1x11 shifter/brake levers and rear derailleur. The rest of the pics are from various stages from getting the frame to how it looked before last night.

This is an hour after I picked the frame/fork up for $20 on BookFace marketplace.

I just completed a mtb > big bmx build with a 16" Diamond Back Ascent. Turned out cool and fun to ride at the skatepark, too! If I could post pics, I would, but first have to post 10 times...

Well it's -7 outside right now. Still waiting for a stem (due to arrive today) for the KHS before I can finish that build. But I did get in some used Reynolds DV46 wheels yesterday. Swapped some Veloflex Corsa 700 x 25 tires onto them with latex tubes, mounted a 10 speed cassette, and then mounted those on the old Calfee I'm still sorting out. Didn't give much weight savings over what I had on there but should be a lot more aero and comfortable I think. I also swapped on a pair of new Look Keo blade pedals. The changes have the bike at 17 lbs 13 ozs now. I have a lot of tire clearance still though so I wish I had some larger Conti 4000s II 700 x 25's to put on it. I've got new Conti 700 x 28's but those I'm sure would not clear.

Anyway, still monkeying with this one and no test ride today with the cold temps and fresh snow having fallen yesterday.
