Ride on 8/7/2022

I'm planning on coming on Sunday for my first Rose Bowl vintage ride. Who else is planning on coming? Hope to see a few people I encountered during Eroica CC in April.

Hope there will be a big turn out.

Thanks

I won’t be riding on Sunday, down with Covid, started in my family almost two weeks ago and I was last to get it. Feeing pretty down and out but slowly getting better, was fully vaccinated so symptoms have been tolerable.

Hope you’re doing well and say hi to everyone for me.

Great to hear you’ll be coming, sorry to miss you this time. Hope you enjoy the ride and camaraderie. Just realized tomorrow will be 97 deg!!! Way too hot for me in any condition, discretion is the better part of valor for us older guys. Stay safe and well hydrated!

Everyone take a bunch of photos and post them here.

Can’t make it this month - 58 days to LEroica, and I need to get a long day in for training.

It will be a hot one - hydrate and have an extra Coke at the Pizza stop.

Are you going to Gaiole in October? I met one gentlemen who lives in Laguna Beach that is going too. May be the southern ca contingent should coordinate a few practice training rides and swap info before the big event.

I was thinking to start a thread like @mech986 did for the Eroica cc.

Thanks

triple digits temp ride in Pasadena

Not much socializing on my part, missed the treats at the end, my companion couldn't hack the heat....

Couple photos of riders, no photos of bikes although the bikes brought from folks were gleaming... Im afraid i only have battle scared bikes no show bikes```` Not sure when i can step up to the level of commitment i saw today on vintage bikes.

Not to hijack the thread. Who lives in Laguna? I'll be in North Laguna for the next 3 weeks.

Per Weather Underground, at the ride start of 11:00 am, the local temperature will be around 95ºF, and if the ride takes 2-3 hours, then the temperature at the ride finish will be 100ºF.

Here's the WU station: https://www.wunderground.com/hourly/.../date/2022-9-4

From today's Washington Post - What Extreme Heat Does to the Human Body:
"The wet-bulb temperature that marks the upper limit of what the human body can handle is 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 Celsius). But any temperatures above 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 Celsius) can be dangerous and deadly."

So, I'm not going. Stay home, stay safe stay alive.
A friend of mine got heatstroke at Bike Across Kansas a few years ago, and he's been altered for life. He is less capable of tolerating heat than before.

Curious if someone’s Garmin can approximate the Pasadena wet bulb temperature for us on Sunday morning.

I’m not riding either, only two weeks from last symptoms of Covid, still fatigued on occasion, way out of shape now as haven’t ridden in almost 3 months. Plus super hot practically anywhere in LA basin and Orange County not right at the beach.

I’m in La Habra and at 10:15am it’s 100 deg. now going up to 106 deg., Pasadena is 96 going to high of 104 deg. For comparison, Cambria is way hot for its norm at 69 deg to a high of 81, but Paso Robles is already 83 going to 105. Furnace Creek in Death Valley is 110 going to 117, but will hit 123 over the next 3 days. The entire San Joaquin valley will be above average 110 the entire week, so caution for those driving on highway 5.

IMO, be super careful if you’re riding today, you have to bring extra water and electrolytes and be cognizant of dehydration and heat stroke. It will be 99 at 11:00 and 102 or higher by 1:00pm, IMO very dangerous.

Don’t be afraid to bail if conditions are bad. Get into shade and out of sun and ambient air - like inside a department store or other to cool off. But even ambient air in shade is too hot so there’s little respite if you get overheated. Stay safe out there.

My understanding from Filipe is only two people showed due to the excessive heat so they left and went home, not a bad idea given the circumstances.

As Chuck says “the ride goes on regardless of whether anyone shows up”.

I left my house very early to do a local ride up one of our canyons .the temp was heading to 100 by 9:00 so after the down hill and exiting the canyon, I got a ride home. Usually , even when it is hot , I get cooled down blasting out of there , but not yesterday. Glad I got a ride home , too hot to be fun.

Well the October ride was pretty fantastic , weather wise. Great day to be out and about with my fellow Vintage cyclist.Lots of great examples of vintage steel out there including a Lighthouse Chronos TT bike, which also managed to take the King of the Mountain points to the top of Baldwin Ave.

After the Bean Town pit stop, the group broke up and several riders went in different direction. Our small group managed to have someone get a Flat, on our No Drop ride, we waited patiently for the repair which didnt take very long. It only afforded us more time to talk about vintage bicycles. The rumor is that next months ride will include several Torpado bikes.
