Seems to me you are making a lot of assumptions of what was shown and what people do with their bikes. Sometimes you can enjoy a ride as is and don't have to "optimize" it as a "rider". Experiencing a janky old derailleur isn't isn't worse than a whatever you think is "best for a rider". You are creating a false dichotomy.

that Confente is interesting.
when built is was painted and transferred as a LeJeune.
the paint, transfers, were dreadful. It was under duress true enough, the headtube was dark blue and those old silver paper stars were glued to the headtube - the kind a grade school teacher might affix to a well done paper or worksheet. Clear over that.
this was part of the reason Mario was looking for a different painter after he was locked out.
at some point the bikes were repainted updating the American theme. They look pretty good.
Boyer might have used one in a Colorado stage race later.
one was purchased by the late Dr Hollenberg - not sure if he sold it on or his heirs.

Ultimately Jim Cunningham did Mario's paint.
A Confente frame was indeed used by Boyer in the Red Zinger Classic. Pic below is scanned from Red Zinger Bicycle Classic booklet. Kind of crappy scan but I did not want to mangle the publication. I believe you can still make out the Confente markings on the seat tube They are more visible in the booklet. It cannot be said for certain that these frames are one and the same.
UPDATE: Looking at cb400bill 's photos of the bike, I think it can be said the frame in the pics I shared is the same frame.
Photo below is a crop from a larger photo from Denver Post

What. A. Show.
So many beautiful bikes on display. Brands I’d not seen in person before. Brands I’d not heard of before.
Had a wonderful chat with our very own Doug Fattic. Also had a great time talking to Mark Nobilette as he showed me all the little details of his display bikes. I also had the pleasure to talk to Bianchigirl.
The swap meet outside and inside was very good with lots of components and bikes available, both used and NOS. It was a good thing Mrs 400 was with me to keep my spending to a minimum.
Here are some pics.

Cleanest PX-10 in the world.
good Hour bike replica.
last image of the real one had the seatpost nearly slammed down in the frame.
that set of images did show Pino like tubes running perpendicular to the chainstay centerline. When I saw those it was a surprise.

"It's Original Confente paint"
the LeJeune paint was dreadful.
I would have repainted it with no hesitation, but you are correct. Not original finish.
the color coding on the fork crown as to use is lost also unless that info retained elsewhere.

Thanks for the pix cb400bill. I'm still interested in the list of award winners. I watched a bit of Tim Potter's FB Live video, but when it got to the award ceremony, I turned it off because I couldn't understand a word Mike Kone was saying. This was a frequent problem during the show. I don't know if many speakers didn't know how to work the mic (too close) or if it was simply poor acoustics and unfortunate listener location.
