Acquired a Peugeot PX-10

I recently acquired a 63.5 CM (25 inch) Peugeot PX-10 with scratches and patina. It has the derailleur tapped for a modern derailleur. It came with a Stronglight headset and a bottom bracket.

Yup, looks just like my '72. And IMO, blue PX-10s wear patina better than white ones!

So that's what it is!
If I'd known, I'd have drilled it to get some PB Blaster in through the bottom. Stuck stem issue, just took longer working from the top.

'72 model PX's are interesting in that their Stronglight 93 chainsets can be either early or late type depending on the date of the cycle's actual construction

Verot made a change in the model 93 mid-year

this sample set from VB shows the difference

the drive side arm is early/G1 and the non-drive arm is late/G2

regard the chamfer around the pedal hole

What's the serial number? I have same size, same color, serial 2513217.
Also: what is that thing screwed into the rear NDS dropout?

Excellent find! I had a 64cm blue frame, just like yours, that I found one day. Was WAY too big for me, but I still built it up and rode it and commuted on it a few times. It was actually pretty fun! Was an enjoyable experience. I now have a much better fitting PX-10

I've wondered about the production numbers for PX-10s in the early 70's- it's my understanding that the plain Nervex lugs were only used for around a year, but I seem to see at least as many plain-lug PX-10s (if not more) than the fancy lug versions that came before, and for a couple years, after. Certainly the less-than-stellar fit and finish of 70's Peugeots indicates they were flying out the door! Finish flaws aside, the PX-10s up to the geometry change to tighter/racier ('73?) are great riding cycles.

Twenty years ago on the old Classic Rendezvous list I made myself crazy trying to figure out the PX-10 lug story. I think the first use of the plain Nervex DuBois lugs was 1972, combined with the geometry in use throughout the '60s. I think all of those had the serial number plate riveted to the underside of the BB shell, which I think came in c.1970 along with the shift to a foil rather than a riveted metal headbadge and the 1970-74 graphics with the gold and black bands running parallel to the "Peugeot" brand on the down tube.

I believe the steeper angled, racier looking PX-10s start in 1973. I had an example with black Nervex Professional lugs and parts stamps indicating 1973. Oddly enough, its serial number was stamped directly into the BB shell, parallel to the BB spindle, apparently by hand, and very crudely. I also had a c.1974 PX-10LE, featuring the steeper angles, plain DuBois lugs that were left white with gold lining and a plainer fork crown. It had the same hand-stamped serial number and orientation.

The original poster's bike is lovely!

Did you ever have one of the earlier, 'slacker' angled frames? If so, can you recall enough to comment on the difference in feel between the two? I've been looking for a larger frame to replace my just-a-bit-too-small '72. I've seen some of the later, racier ones, but I love how my '72 rides that I'm wary of the different geo....

I had this c.1970 "transitional" given to me as a frameset in 2006. I say transitional because it had a foil headbadge decal with rivets in it -

- but with the '70-'74 graphics pattern.

Mine had the same angles as the blue one vonfilm posted. The slacker ones are just more comfortable, more like a classic sports-tourer based on racing bikes built when roads were poorly surfaced. Oddly enough, I didn't feel any slower on the slacker '70 than I had on the steeper '73, but I felt less beat up at the end of the ride. In the end, I wound up sending mine on and seeking out a Gitane TdF - which had more in common with the earlier PX-10s than the later ones, but somehow felt a touch more intuitive, handling wise.

purchased a '70 new in 1970 and found it most pleasant

it was lively, fun & light without any harshness or squirrelyness

felt that it "disappeared" under me rather well

hope you enjoy yours

rustystrings61 : in the book “Peugeot Classic Bicycles” the authors confirmed your theory that the DuBois lugs were introduced in the “wave of modernization” for the 1972 model year.

How much could I reduce the stand over height on this with 650b wheels and 35 mm tires?

Back-of-the-envelope calculation: drop 19 mm for the nominal change from 622 to 584 mm diameter rims, and add something like 6 mm back for the change from 23 to 35 mm -- not much.

As said above, it's not much. But, a '72 PX-10 converted to 650b is fantastic. I've got 42mm tires on mine, and room for fenders. I'll ride mine just about anywhere (& be comfortable and classy while doin' it)!

It is quite nice on the gravel and otherwise generally crappy roads around me. Though to be honest, the 700x38c Rene Herse tires I have on another bike are actually a bit more comfortable than the Grand Bois 42's on the PX-10. The GB's were on sale, so I thought I'd give 'em a try, but when they wear out I'll bit the $$ bullet and get RH 42s....

You guys are making me miss my 1980 PKN-10, which is a delightful bike, but one size too long and tall for me -- a much better fit for my elder son.

Having worked at a Nishiki/Peugeot dealership 1972-74, I am particularly partial to the PR-10s and PX-10s of that era, including that great set of decal graphics. Great-riding bikes with versatile tire clearance exceeding that of many subsequent race-oriented bikes. As late as the 1980 model year, I could still install 700Cx32 or even 700Cx35 tires -- no way on my 1981 Bianchi, which won't even take a full 28mm tire width and height.
