Former NBA player Shawn Bradley disclosed Wednesday that he was paralyzed two months ago when he was struck from behind by a vehicle while riding a bike near his Utah home.
The statement issued through the Dallas Mavericks on behalf of the 48-year-old Bradley was the first public acknowledgement of the incident involving the second overall pick in the 1993 draft by Philadelphia.
The 7-foot-6 Bradley was riding his bike about a block from his home in St. George, Utah, on Jan. 20, when he was struck, causing a traumatic spinal cord injury, the statement said. Bradley has been hospitalized since the accident, undergoing neck fusion surgery and rehabilitation.

Sad. A decade ago his custom Trek road bike was stolen. It was recovered pretty quickly. Not like many people could ride it.

Very sad news. I read all the articles about this I could find and none described the 'accident.' I wonder how fast the car that hit him was going. He was only a block from his home. I stopped riding in traffic over a decade ago - it's just too dangerous on a bike.

We gotta stop calling cyclist being hit from behind 'accidents'. Crash, collision, vehicular maiming, caused by driver negligence. Though it doesn't have the same ring as 'accident', which just kinda rolls off the tongue.
Most collisions are not accidental, but are a direct result of driver error and negligence. Having a tree that was struck by lightning fall in front of you causing you to swerve into oncoming traffic and colliding with another car is an accident, and probably completely unavoidable and unpredictable.
Wishing Mr Bradley all the best in his rehab and recovery. The bike pictured above looks like a toy bike in his hands.

Blaming the "auto industry" may never provide the positive change that cyclists are often after. It's holding the people, the decision making people, accountable in driving the ignorance that is often swept under the rug. The accidents that happen out on the freshwater lakes likely have a higher ratio of severe accidents (loosely used word at this point) than the least lifechanging recoverable injuries. Location & reporting go hand in hand for these broadcasts.

Sure - but it's a lot harder to get hit by a slow moving car - especially on a bike! The driver has more opportunity to see the danger and move out of the way.
