links and urls broken
somethin's happenin here
what it is ain't exactly clear
links don't work, when they do they have a number appended to them, none of my book marks work
and the whole site was down a few minutes ago
I blame index shifting

Yup, something funny's going on. Hardly able to move from page to page...time for a bike ride!

The admins already know. This is at least the fourth thread about it.

Temporary glitch. Happens to most websites occasionally. Last night I was researching older threads for info on cranksets. I couldn't bring up the old threads conventionally but Google cache still worked. Minor inconvenience.

I usually use google to search the site for older threads on specific topics. So, now, none of the google search results are going to the page they find.

Why did the C&V subforum URL change?
Just a few days ago this worked:
https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vintage/
Now it gets a "page not found"
The "new" URL appears to be:
https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vintage-181/
It appears that all the rest of the sub-forums have been afflicted as well. Maybe I missed the memo, but why did this happen?
In Google Chrome, the sites I use often only require a letter or two before it guesses where I'm going. I'm here so much that just the letter "b" autofills the C&V URL. Suddenly, just a few days ago it stopped working. backing out to just www.bikeforums.net, I can get to the home page, then navigate to C&V. I wouldn't mind so much except that when I search, old posts, they're all dead links. And all of those internal links many of us have painstakingly made in our posts are broken.

Yep. Numerous reports of this glitch.

Not to mention that today, there have been extended periods where BF was "non-responsive"; and no, it wasn't my internet service, it was BF. The breaking of links painstakingly saved by users is not a trivial thing, either. WTF indeed; and in true BF form, question "why" goes unanswered.
The problem of people in control of software who don't really use it day to day, or suffer the consequences of their "improvements" seems to be endemic to modern computer life.

Before bashing BikeForums and dissing the mods, see the following:
https://www.bikeforums.net/forum-sug...orums-1233970/
The mods and admins are aware of the issue (no, this is not intentional - note that desktop breadcrumbs are broken as they reference the old links) and they've started a ticket with the back end developers who will have to find out why the permalink structure got broken.
Have patience.

There was a time when corporate and vendor IT support worked on weekends and holidays, but you know, IT support technical people are at the mercy of their managers.

okay, so now i know i'm not the only one who's run into this problem. funny thing is i didn't have the problem "page not found" from the computer at my work. but, i do from my computer at home; this morning and now. no complaints. i'm sure it'll be fixed. i just use a different path to get to the subforums than usual
if it helps at all, i get "page not found" when i click on the subforum links that are underlined ....ie. classic and vintage. however, i can go directly to the top where is says Forums with the down arrow to it's right side and the menu drops down to to display the forum i intend and get there that way

Anyone give any thought to a possible hack into the underlying software, or some bad actors messing with the entire site to cause confusion and chaos, just because they can, or because of other malicious intent? Are redirects possibly grabbing data or passwords?
not a bad time to attack internet sites when IT is gone for holiday weekends.
imagine if this was your energy, water, gas, internet, etc. sites.
just a thought.

And, what is that with taking perfectly functional British bikes and putting French wheels on them... no wonder everything is broken!!!

As I mentioned earlier, Google cached pages for bike forums still work.
That'll work until the problem is sorted out.
- Do a Google search, using "site:bikeforums.net" to narrow it down if you prefer.
- Look for the three vertically oriented dots next to the URL.
- Left click on the three vertical dots. A box will pop open with an option to open the cached page.
That'll work until the problem is sorted out.

If you have the intent of getting an answer to a question like this, post the thread in Forum Assistance and Suggestions, because that's the only one anyone from IB reads. If it's just whining about the way IB runs its forums, carry on.
I recall that previously they had numbers on all the forums and then got rid of them. Mods and Admins were not informed of this change.
