The Last Bike I'm Buying... Cannondale content
for 2021...
I only wanted a crankset for the remainder of this year. I happened upon it this morning, perusing the local classified sites. It just happened to be attached to a bike that fit me. At only fifteen minutes away, I decided to check it out.
The seller was the original owners son. I believe he had passed away recently, but didn't want to ask.. He said that his dad bought the frameset, and loaded it with good parts. After getting home, I looked up the serial number.

Looking through the 89 Cannondale catalog, 66cm was only available as a frameset. So what the seller said sounds right.
Anyhow the gentleman mentioned that there was some interested parties, but they wanted parts and not the whole bike.. He was glad to see that I was big enough to ride it. That's probably why he brought out a couple things afterwards. He threw in in his dad's toolbox and a bunch of jerseys(mostly new).

Not that I want to start a Huge Bicycle arms race with you as I'd already be far behind, but I have been a prior owner of a 66cm 1989 SR800 frameset years ago and wished the top tube was a centimeter shorter (or two). For such a steep HT angle, the trail came out to 56mm or so. Very neutral and plenty docile if you want it to be. These 3.0 frames were good.

Awesome! Have fun with it. I love big Cannondales, having 2 myself, a 27” ST Tourer and a 66cm CAAD5. I can honestly say that riding my CAAD5 is the most fun I’ve had on a bike. It can be a bit harsh over the crappy roads here in Maine, but it makes up for it with speed and super precise handling. Let us know how you like the ride…. And if you ever decide to sell!

I'm guessing it's been repainted, for a couple of reasons. First, the decals don't jive with 1989, and the color wasn't offered. Second, the decal from a Connecticut paintshop on the seat tube. The original owner was from Maine.
I'm also taking a wild stab that it maybe had a Mavic group on it originally. There's a nice Mavic bottom bracket in the toolbox, and a few Mavic pieces still on the bike.

You totally got me me with that. It made me realize that when I bought my last bike of 2021 (the first week of March!) I didn't realize it was going to be the last. In fact, for a second I thought I might not have bought any bikes this year, it's been so long.

The Salsa stem is 110mm. With a 24" top tube, that is a bit of a stretch for me. I found this 95mm Control Tech stem in the basement. With that and a seat adjustment, the fit is better. As a bonus, the stem and post are a match.
I haven't decided yet what changes will be made. I would like to pilfer the chainset for another bike...
Unfortunately, the stem doesn't have much rise adjustment.
Removed the computer and wiring gets rid of some clutter.

I have a Technomic if you need more rise on the stem, but it is 60mm I think.

I tore it down the other night. The big red bike doesn't really need any work done. The original owner seemed to be on top of maintenance. I encountered loctite on several fasteners, and plenty of grease on post and stem. The bottom bracket and headset spin very smooth, so I will leave them be for now.
I took some scratch X to the frame, and the some polish. There's plenty of nicks in the paint, but only one bad spot where the chain probably got sucked in on the stay. There's a tiny ding in the top tube next to a cable guide, but it isn't worth complaining about. The paint isn't original, probably redone late in the 90s? It's much nicer than the original Cannondale paint I've seen on several 80s and 90s C-dales, and a lightish burgandy in color..
I like the Mavic derailleur, but it'll get shelved for a Dura Ace part.
The first time I've held a Dura Ace cassette. It is an intricate piece..
