I am thinking about picking up a set of new old stock Araya 1W 700c clinchers. They appear to be an early aero style rim? They are labeled as "Super Hard Anodized."
Just wondering if anyone has an opinion on these. I am looking to build them to some Suntour Sprint/Superbe hubs.

I had these on superbe pro hubs, on a raliegh racing USA. I loved the looke and they held up well, at least until my brakeless roomate hit me from behind.

Local shop has the rims NOS, if you're looking for one. I also have a used pair laced to a set of hubs.

Kurt, the CTL-370's were also Super Hard Anodized... do you know if they're the same ones?

If so, they're pretty decent rims, and very light. The "370" in the name means 370g/rim.
I'd love to build an NOS set like that on DA/600 or Record hubs.

The initial reviews said they needed truing a lot, but they also were running Panaracer 700x18's on them at 120psi.

Never seen the CTL-370's, so I couldn't say. The 1W's are clear anodized - I believe there is a photo of their cross section in Berto's '88 Upgrading Your Bike, if you happen to have the book.

I'll snap a shot of them for you tomorrow.

They look identical to the Wolber Super Champion or the Wolber GTX, slight difference in color.

I had the 1w's for a while, was quite happy. Running on the adx510s now, which seem basically the same except matte silver. Good stuff!

These eBay rims are the first I've seen with dark anodizing - I'm used to them in silver w/o the label as on the Competition:

Robbie, the CTL-370 were standard, box section rims, not aero section.

The ADX-1W was narrower and not quite as high profile as the similar ADX-2W. Curiously, Araya also offered a steel, aero profile rim, the ADX-4W

Got the Record hubs and the rims; now all I need to do is sell some stuff so I can afford to have my guy at the lbs build em up. Mine are tubbies but I'd love to have a set of clinchers in these too.

These are OEM on my old Raleigh Team bike from 89 or 90 (I can't remember). Granted, low miles and 28c tires, but I've also used them on unpaved washboard backroads and such and they've never needed truing.

For fixed gear riding they should be okay. I have a used the close relative the ADX510 and the ADX-4 tubular. The braking surface is terrible. I'd only consider using them fixed and not on a full on a road bicycle. A front brake will stop okay but not as good as a flat braking surface. Good luck.

+1 CTL-370 rims are box section. Here are a couple of pics of a set I have on a bike right now. My attraction to these rims is that they came laced to Suntour Superbe Pro hubs.

Thanks for the offer but I sold them along with the bike. It trued out after the crash but had a slight flat spot. Bummer.
I'd love to put them on my girlfriend's univega I'm building though..

I have 3 sets of those!!!!

1 pair lback w/ Suntour Sprint hubs.
1 pair silver with Campy Gran Sport hubs.
1 pair tubular with no hubs.

I hate to dredge an old thread but....

Several of you seem to have experience with these Araya 1W rims. Couple questions:

1) How strong are these rims...fairly so or are they noodly?
2) At least one poster mentioned the braking performance wasn't good. Any further comments?
3) How durable is the super hard anodizing on the braking surface?

Reason I ask is these would be a decent clincher replacement for a bike I'm working on that had some Araya super hard anodized tubular rims. They'd be very correct looking.

No experienced comments to add about the Araya 1W rims. But, they look very similar to the Matrix IsoC rims I've been riding recently. With the limited amount of miles I've ridden on them, I'm happy with the ride and surprised that they don't have the normal brake wear of other anodized rims I've seen. Were the designs of these 2 rims similar?

I have a pair on the Super Record(record hubs) and I had a pair on the Team(gyromaster hubs). The rear Team rim somehow got crushed from the side when I left the bike at my parents house for a few days.

I really like them and I've kept an eye out for another pair or a single rim(silver), but haven't come across one recently. I've had no negative issues with them and wouldn't call them noodly, but I don't think that I have come across a noodly rim.

Edit: Keith wait! They sucked, so go ahead and send me a rim or pair when you get back from Nashville.

I have a set laced to shimano dura-ace hubs and they work great. If you can grab them at a good price go for it . I don't think that you will be disappointed.

Blast from the past thread - repechage, they aren't as heavy as a period touring clincher though. Still a very serviceable rim - and I dare say, unlike many overly lightweight aero designs of today, less prone to cracking at the spoke holes.

I like them.

This bike has a 27" 1W on the front and a 27" 2W (wider) on the back:






This one has a 27 1W on the back, a very close match with a Matrix IsoC (front):




The Torpado in particular is one of my favourite-feeling bikes even though it's so heavy, and I think a big part of that is confidence in the rigidity and strength of the wheels, not just from building them but from the feel.
It's the same feel as these wheels:




Sometime soon I'll swap the Torpado wheels onto another lighter bike and see if that's so.

There's also a 700 1W wheel here waiting for a mate to turn up, soon as it does it'll be on something.

Anodized rims look good and look period correct, but I wouldn't choose them if I was building up a new pair of rims. The braking is just too inferior to rims with machined side walls.
Also- they look horrible once the anodization wears off. And it always wears off in an uneven manner.
