Used to think this was crazy, but having done trips in parts of the world , like in the UK, where they will sometimes throw out a 20, 25% grade at you, and the fact that Ive carried more crap than usual, I really like having this low gear.
Even if I don't use it that often, I'm sure as hell glad its there sometimes. If I dont need it, thats fine, I just dont shift into it, or shift up , no downside to having it really, not for touring anyway.
Mountain bike triple, 44/32/22 and 11-34. Not ideal for light touring or unloaded riding, but really, for most touring I do, it works quite well.

Taking a rest day a Bald Eagle State Park after a very rainy night in camp. Saw a ruffed grouse yesterday, which is Pennsylvania’s state bird.

Six days riding the railtrails in British Columbia this past week. Averaged 60klms a day. Ton of hard work for me and a ton of fun.

The Columbia and Western Railtrail and the Kettle Valley Railtrail run from Castlegar to Hope with some side lines. We travelled from Grand Forks to Osoyoos.

The morning started out great, but after 7 miles I decided to raise my seat post and broke the bolt. 60 miles from the finish. Cavalry is on its way.

Foggy morning on the Delaware River.

Second bikepack trip this weekend. 25 hilly miles from home and back. The creeks stunk to high heaven from dead and dying spawned out salmon.

Heading back home.

I've been missing some great pics here lately. 🙂

@Imaginos, I'm jealous, always wanted to see more of Alaska. 😉 I've been to Dutch Harbor & Unalaska, in the process of commercial fishing, but that's not nearly enough. 🤔

I met an Inuit lady in Seattle, who told me about her people picking blackberries right alongside the bears. 😲 At first, I thought she was pulling my leg, but as I got to know her, I really don't think so. Some people are just too honest, and don't have leg-pulling in them. 🙂

I’ve lived in Alaska for over 50 years since I was 12. I’ve never taken it for granted and have never had the desire to live anywhere else. I went to HS in Anchorage and Kodiak, went to tech school in Seward, lived in Yakutat,Ketchikan,Kenai. Spent twelve years in logging camps on Afognak Island also. Had a 35 year career in logging including the last 18 years on Prince of Wales where I plan to spend the rest of my days…..riding my bike.

@garryg, mmm grapes. I ran out today, but got more right away. 😁 Those in your pic should be perfect in a couple more days. Definitely a nice bunch there. 👍

Want to adopt a 60 year old kid, for a riding partner? 😁😉 Just goofing, obviously, but I'd love to get back up there. 🙂

After this last summer in California, I'm pretty sure I'll be heading North again soon, but not sure how far North. 🤔

Enjoy your retirement, and post lots of pics here. 👍

The road, U.S. Hwy 20 into the Cascade Mountains, was closed to through traffic for about 3 weeks. It was hard to resist the ride..

I finally got out again after staying home fpr two or so years due to recent worldwide events. Just a short 4 1/2 day trip to an 85km cycle trail formed from old bush tram lines and roads. It's spring here right now, the place is slowly coming back to life...

Thanks! It's the first time I've been far with these handlebars. The way the bike is set up there's actually really only one hand position, but it's a very good position, so was never an issue...

Heh, does that include my finger being in the frame top right. You need to be careful with the ultra wide on a phone..

I've yet to tour on them, but have had them set up on two bikes. On a fatbike in winter and some summer trail riding, fun but a lot of body position changing all the time, so a different experience. Had them on my commuter also for a summer, so more similar to touring and I found the multiple hand positions not bad, even for strong headwinds. Not the same as long multiple days, but for mixed surface touring, I'm fairly confident they'd work.
$till a drop at fan for most touring.
