You don't need a 40 tooth if you stick with a triple. I'm building up a 1991/2 Stumpjumper as a drop bar bike. I'm running 3 x 7 gearing with 46/36/24 rings and an 11-28 7 speed freewheel.

Also for rims, Sun CR 18 rims are cheap, strong, and good.

In my experience, a 36T cog will fit fine. I have tried a 40T on a bike or two. On the first it was working for a while with the stock deore derailer and then wound up with a long cage tourney derailer (sacrilage!).

A 92 Marin that I set up specifically for hill climbing. 42/32/22 x 11-40. I can climb to the point where I'm so slow balance becomes an issue.



The other similar build to the OP was initially a 1x drivetrain 42x11-34 from 11-28. That was nice for a gravel bike. I kept the granny bailout gear as a manual shift option in case I hit a particularly tough hill. https://www.bikeforums.net/cyclocros...e-i-could.html






In that thread, post 39 I talk about swapping out my 11-34 cassette for a sunrace 11-40 cassette, using the same derailer and thumb shifters. This meant changing the hub body to an 8speed but it worked.

Not quite sure about that. I can think of three that are friction only (Campy, Simplex and Suntour) and two that are indexed (Suntour and Shimano). Personally, my personal favorite is Suntour Accushift bar ends...

Velocity cliffhanger gets you tubeless and 26” rim brake rims.

If you’re actually going off-road, I’d definitely go tubeless. Here in the desert Southwest, tubeless is a requirement due to all the goat heads.

Ive had great luck with microshift Advent 1x9 11-42. You can even get it in a thumbie version.

Regarding the Lauterwasser handlebars, you may want to look at the Nitto/Rivendell Albastache, or one of the many dirt drop-type drop bars that are out there. You might find these much more practical. Plus, installing drop bars on a mountain bike can pose height/reach issues. I suggest you read the MTB drop bar conversion thread in this subforum before you get too far in your build. As someone has already mentioned, the frame may be designed for 130mm spacing. Lots of times you can fit a 135mm axle with a 9-speed freehub, but I know that on my 1986 Kuwahara, the chain would bind up against the dropout when I used a 9-speed cassette, so I am happily using a 7-speed cassette with zero problems. I also recommend going with a triple up front, and using cantilever brakes. You'll find lots of love for cantis on this board.

I went with some microshift thumbies. After riding it a few seasons thinking I may go from nitto mustache bars to some old drops from my trek elance 86.

The reach and geo definitely is really aggressive as I'm a shorter person (5'1 16in frame) I went with a road style quill stem and nitto mustache bars, but the reach hasn't really presented many issues other than feeling goofy lol for leaning so far forward
I did end up going with a double in the front 44x32? and 9 speed in the back

I have a '92 Stumpjumper with drop bars. I converted the 7 speed hub to 8 and use indexing Ultegra bar end shifters. The performance is pretty flawless.
