So in more recent news I got hit on the left side while riding my Schwinn Collegiate back from work. A truck started turning left (no turn signal on until entering the intersection) into my path as I crossed the street. Fortunately it was a very low speed (5-10 mph) collision, but I got bruised in four places, the fork bent on the left side, and the frame got two scratches. Sadly I ran away before I could call 911. Today I took a pipe fitting and a piece of PVC pipe and successfully bent the fork back.
I should be thankful I rode a heavy steel bike instead of aluminum, carbon, or lighter steel, or the accident could have been much worse. Also thank God I had a helmet on as I always do.
Anyway, no more street riding, especially in weird 3+1 way intersections with a Do Not Enter sign on one side. Trail, sidewalk, and bus/train from now on.

We’re doing a SF Nor-Cal (Peninsula) ride in a couple of weeks. @genejockey and I have discussed some options of the route. There’s were a couple of different road choices the GeneJockey proposed from my typical rides so I did some exploratory riding off my normal northerly Saturday ride up through Los Altos/PaloAlto/The Portola Loop/Canada Road. I usually don’t snap many pictures on a ride, but I wanted to capture the start and some of the turns in case they were needed for the cue sheet.
About 60 miles and 3000 ft (rollers no long climbs, as the Colnago is set up with a 42-23).

I took the Gios with it's bling wheels out for some climbing today. We've had some gorgeous weather lately and I just nipped the last bit of somewhat cool weather and could feel the humidity rolling back in today. Came across an old turtle in the middle of the road in the sun, so moved him on across before he got squashed, baked or both. I moved him in the direction he was pointing and as he was stationary when I picked him up, I had a moment of doubt that maybe he had just decided to turn around and go back. Hopefully I made the right choice and didn't just piss him off. Hard to tell with turtles.

Really poor air and heat indexes in the 80's so at 10,000 have been keeping my rides to a hour or less this past week or so . Spent some of the none ride time working on the gearing of my old single speed trainer/beater with parts on hand I ended up going with a 38 front and a cassette hub rebuilt to about 126 spacing with usable 18/17/16 spaced for a nice chain line works pretty good only takes about a minute to change gearing and all three ride pretty nice.

Felt better from my bruises today, so I had a nice seven mile test ride on the Capital Crescent Trail with my new 3-speed folding bike (Huffy Touriste, a rebadged Japanese Sekai folder from the 80s). Stopped at Dalecarlia Tunnel and headed back uphill. It's so nimble and easy to control. Next time all the way to the Mall and maybe Capitol Hill, and then the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail to Bladensburg Waterfront Park after a brief Metro interlude to Stadium/Armory.

Jacob and I did the Foothills Trail today for the first time in a couple years. Super ride - the trail is in fantastic condition and the weather was just right. Scenery wasn't bad, either! We went from the East Puyallup trailhead to Buckley and back, getting something around 40 miles. Best part was Jacob, who's been suffering some sciatica issues lately, telling me he felt fine all day on the bike, so at least it's not affecting his riding. Good deal.

Short ride around town this morning before I crawl into the overnight work shift hole. I keep seeing SwimmerMike Super pop up so I checked to make sure it wasn’t mine that had migrated itself to NoCal. It had not.

@gugie, Velorosso, JohnT and myself survived a trip up Larch mountain. OK, we started in Troutdale — but we did make it to the observation deck. Getting down was another matter — it was 55°F in th parking lot when we left the top, which is the start of a 15 mile descent. I used the baggies from my lunch as gloves!

Yes, these old Schwinn's take a lick'n and keep on ticking. Those Ashtabula forks are tough and quite aerodynamic too. I am surprised not to find them on more carbon fiber, aerodynamically styled bikes.
I'm glad to hear that it is back to working condition.There is a DupliColor Chrysler touch up paint that is a good match for Schwinn Sky Blue. I can't remember the name, but I have what remains of the can back home. I'll try to find it tonight. The other popular touch up tip is to match it up to nail polish. Bring your bike into a CVS or Walgreens and see if you can find a match. Of course, ask first, if you can bring your bike in. And if those two options don't work, Testors metallic blue model paint you may be able to find in an Craft or Art supply store is not too far off, I think.

Windchill on the way downhill was much lower! I was finding myself seeking out non-shaded sections to ride through.

Sorry to hear that you got hit, by a truck no less. I it sounds like you are ok physically, although bruises are still injuries and they could cover longer term damage. I am avoiding riding with traffic more these days and am seeking out trails. I am not commuting so this is a luxury.

I am better now, thanks! My bike is fine again; the repair was surprisingly easy. I just bent the left side of the fork back with a pipe until it was straight again.

I spent a lot of my formative years as a cyclist traveling up to Charlottesville from Ferrum while my mother worked on her masters and doctorate. My favorite things c.1974-76 were the bike shops, in particular The Blue Wheel (it was in a funky old house, I think) and whatever hole-in-the-wall it was that housed the Raleigh dealership. I never got to actually ride there, though ...
