200-on-100, a Vermont Double-Century
The 2023 200-on-100 will start at 5:00 am, Saturday, June 24th, at the Canadian border in North Troy, Vermont. It will finish many hours later at the Massachusetts state line, just south of Readsboro, Vermont. The name comes from the primary road, scenic Vermont 100, which runs down the middle of the state, and the distance, 212 miles. This is a fun, picturesque, and tough ride which has been running off and on as a semi-organized event since 1984. The first 100 miles are fairly easy, as long as you don't ride so fast that you don't have the legs to finish the day. The climbs kick in during the second half. First, the Killington climb softens you up. Then Terrible Mountain (that's really its name) gives you a solid punch in the legs at 140 miles. Finally, the long, 12-mile, "When will this ever end?" Mt. Snow climb puts you on your knees and leaves even the strongest riders thankful that the tough stuff is done. Then it's a fun 25 miles to the end, with a wonderful, swooping descent into Readsboro. Of course, we're ignoring all the "little" climbs in-between these monsters. After all, Vermont ain't flat.
If you are an experienced rider, prepare, and pace yourself, you should be able to complete this ride. Whether you make it to the end or not, you will most certainly respect the ride and you will be glad you did it. Most likely, you'll come back to ride it again! The 200-on-100 has no entry fee, and support is the rider's responsibility. Some folks ride self-supported, most pool their resources and con some friend into driving a support vehicle, and some just show up and trust they can find a car they can toss their gear into (a fairly safe bet). We don't guarantee anything, and we don't provide anything except the opportunity to ride an amazing event with a great bunch of like-minded cyclists.
