Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Swimming is discouraged.

Sliding on rocks isn't something I'd like to do. Sounds ouchy. I guess sitting on rocks is ok - it's not climbing.

No rain, only wind. Predicted 35mph gusts where we're going. I usually count on a wind-wise person to step up and change the route.

I headed home early enough yesterday to do an outdoor ride, but after being hit with a couple big gusts on the drive home, I figured discretion is the better part of valor, and rode in the garage. I was also feeling a little down about the situation at work, because even though MY position is secure, and the company is in really good shape (2+ years of burn in the bank), our little outpost had been such a great place. People stayed there even though they could have gotten better paying jobs elsewhere because they liked working together. My group of 7 had 3 folks with 20 years seniority, another with 15, me with 13, and another with 10. The "new kid" had been there 7 years. And now, all scattered to the winds.

So, I almost bagged on riding at all, but a small part of my brain said, "Don't skip the ride because you're feeling down, because that'll make it worse. Ride, and that'll make it better." So I did, and it did, even though it was just riding in the virtual world.

80 degrees for today’s undisclosed activity. I have an eye exam, I hope I pass. I didn't study for it. On a similar note, Roscoe had a check up yesterday and his heart condition hasn't worsened.

I was worried. He wasn't.
Long range shot of said dog resting comfortably:

Given how much nasty stuff the textile industry dumped into the river, you don't really want to get in it. You definitely don't want to disturb the riverbed.

You've got to get to the rocks somehow, and it's not a dedicated path.

Concord, MA! I have old family ties there. My great-great-etc. uncle, Moody Morse, was living in Bradford, when the word came about the British attack. He marched with 27 others the next day to join the fight. They marched 80 miles over 4 days.

He survived the war and settled in Peacham, Vermont. You can buy maple syrup today from nearby Morse Farm.

A little tune written about me

Verse 1:
There's a man who loves his soup
And his long beard, it's quite a scoop
He stirs his noodles with a smile
And adds some spice to make it worthwhile

Chorus:
Noodle soup, noodle soup
It's the best when you're in the loop
He's got his beer and cannabis too
Noodle soup, it's what he'll choose

Verse 2:
He takes a sip, he takes a hit
He loves his soup, he won't quit
The warmth and spice, it fills him up
He takes another bite, it's just enough

Chorus:
Noodle soup, noodle soup
It's the best when you're in the loop
He's got his beer and cannabis too
Noodle soup, it's what he'll choose

Bridge:
He's got his bowl, he's got his spoon
He'll slurp it up, it'll be gone soon
His long beard, it's in the mix
But he doesn't care, he's getting his fix

Chorus:
Noodle soup, noodle soup
It's the best when you're in the loop
He's got his beer and cannabis too
Noodle soup, it's what he'll choose

Outro:
So if you're feeling down and blue
Just grab some soup, it'll do for you
Add some spice, take a hit or two
Noodle soup, it's what you'll want to do.

Sung to tune of “Jingle Bells” I am guessing.

Did my longest and most painful Zwift ride ever. I wanna puke now. It makes me feel especially good that I canceled my subscription and it will lapse in a few days. Fake miles suck on several levels. Especially ones that end with the Alpe de Zwift.

That’s a gorgeous area. The name sounded familiar, and sure enough, I used to drive past it on my way to St. Johnsbury and Lyndon.

I almost did a Tour of Watopia ride that ended there last night, but Mrs GJ had other plans, so I did the one with the Epic KOM and the Radio Tower instead.

Yeah, Peacham looks like a Vermont postcard (I've never been).

Not a chance, my family moved to Pennsylvania. As far as family relationships go, it might as well have been Mongolia.

Well. That 9 speed cassette and 7 speed chain were a match made in heaven. Plus, I'd never ridden 9 speed* before and it was quite luxurious. I did find myself shifting more, what with the smaller steps. And the cherry on top? Tailwind all the way out and cross tailwind the bulk of the way back.

*I received a couple 9 speed wheels in exchange for some mechanic work
