WOW! Low 60’s this morning. I wanted to keep on riding but I’ve got to make myself not over do it until my body gets back use to riding .

I ordered myself a 2023 Electra Cruiser 7d . My old ( he’s three years older than I am , 74 , I think) is wanting me to do a 17 mile loop paved trail that I know from last year has some hills. So if I rode my single speed , I’d be walking a few hills.
I’ve been wanting a geared Cruiser for awhile anyways.

September goal
To get back to riding daily.
9-17 2.8 miles
9-18 1.2 m
9-19 1.0 m
9-20 2.0 m
9-21 3.3 m
9-22 3.3 m
9-23 3.2 m

MTD 16.8 miles

Well, I seem to have blow away that goal.
I doubt that I can get the 900 miles this month but let's see.
I am well ahead of my year goal of 6000 miles. As of today I only need a bit over 700 miles to reach that goal.

Something odd going on with my new Apple Watch tonight. It is usually really close to my Bryton, within 0.1 miles. Tonight it was very low, and it got worse as I put on the miles. At my halfway point it was 0.4 miles low, and when I was done the watch was 0.7 miles low. Elapsed time was correct. Hopefully just a quirk.

My Apple Watch has never been close to matching my Cateye bike computer. It’s always been low , as low as 30%.
I’ve read , it’s because of the watch gps changing satellites .
A wired bike computer is a lot more consistent and reliable.

That's probably true, but the Bryton is wireless GPS as well. I used to get a lot of variation when I used a Fitbit tied to my phone, but I think that was because the phone was using cell towers and not satellites. Sometimes it would be spot-on, other times it would be off by 20%. But the watch and the Bryton had been consistent for every ride over the last week. We'll see what happens next time.

Continue riding daily

My goal is to ride without my knees burning. I never had that before. Maybe my seat is too low (mtb).

I rode over 16 miles this week. I hope to do that again.

I ride about a mile at lunch practicing skills. And then I ride a trail after work before dark.

.
I’ve been struggling with burning knees for a couple of years now . Sorry I haven’t found a solution.
I rode for years before it started .
it did begin as I aged ( I’m 71 ) and started riding on a daily basis .
I’ve tried everything except shorter cranks .
Do get some relief riding a pedal forward cruiser bike .
Cycling is supposed to be easier on the knees than walking . But for me it hasn’t been .
I just took about four months off riding my bike . Only to have my knees start back burning after a short three mile ride this morning..
they usually feel ok the next morning.
Good luck , if you find something that works let us know .

September Goal: 110 miles - completed on 9/25!

9/3 - 11.9 miles (Trek 830 - Fuji is in the shop)
9/4 - 12.0 miles (Trek)
9/5 - 12.7 miles (Trek)

9/6 - 11.8 miles (Trek)
9/7 - 11.4 miles (Trek)
9/13 - 14.7 miles (Trek)
9/22 - 12.5 miles (Trek)
9/23 - 15.1 miles (Trek)
9/25 - 26.2 miles (Trek)

Rode 11.8 miles this morning, then went back out this afternoon and did 14.4 more. Beautiful weather here today! Looking forward to getting my Fuji back from the shop later this week. Getting a new cassette, new chain, new cables, full tune-up. The chain and cassette finally wore out, and it had started slipping.

I finally made a monthly goal. I admit, I set it intentionally low (110 miles) to try to give myself better odds of success. Still bummed, because I used to get 300 miles/month this time of year. 332 miles in September last year. I can't let the old man in! If you are over 50 or 55 and haven't seen this video, I recommend checking it out (below).

September to date: 128.4 miles

2022 total to date: 990.7 miles
2022 Goal: 1,500 miles ( was 2,500 miles once upon a time... )

All my miles are outdoor miles on a 2011 Fuji Absolute 3 (unless otherwise noted) - my backup bike is a 1997 Trek

I'm 63 myself, but I thought I'd give the "youngsters" (50 and up) an early heads up.

That was actually pretty touching, including the story behind it. Thank you.

I worked on stretching this weekend. I especially stretched my IT band, hips, and glutes. Ankles and calves too. I stretched before getting out of bed and at work today. I also rode a new to me bike tonight. I only had burning less than a minute. I’m going to continue to stretch and be mindful of the burn (to stop it since I’m not sure it’s a good burn like when weight lifting) and hopefully I can train my muscles out of it. My legs feel tired all over now, and it’s not so much focused around my knees like before. I hope you can find something that’s helpful so you can enjoy riding again.

Installed the Continental 4 Seasons and the fenders, but something isn't quite right. The wheels spin silently on the stand, but when I'm riding I'm getting some slight chirps from the front that sound like rubbing. It's not constant, and it doesn't happen with each wheel revolution. Sometimes it is silent. Very unpleasant ride as I tried to figure out what it was and worried about a failure at speed. It happens while coasting and doesn't seem to be dependent on speed or whether or not I'm turning. No obvious rubbing on the fender, and no marks on the tire or wheel. Then while riding up a steep hill in the last half-mile of my ride it got louder such that I thought I had broken a spoke and it was thrashing around. But they are all tight. Walked it home.

I've had the fenders on before, but not with these tires. I need to look at this more closely tomorrow, maybe try going out without the fender and see if it still does it.
