We got enough snow that the side streets aren't packing down anywhere there is a moderate amount of traffic. Lots of loose snow in the intersections which makes changing directions a challenge. I've been riding on the sidewalk a lot more to avoid it. The alleys are in great shape, and surprisingly the fat bike trails are firm. The paths haven't seen much plowing due to the holidays, but that just makes them more fun.

Above normal temps in my area, all the snow and ice is gone, the ground has thawed out, I don't even need studded tires right now. It's been like this last week and will continue through this week.

Odd weather this evening. Started my ride at -10C, a bit over an hour later it was -17C, colder than I was bargaining for and the front of my legs were going numb so I turned around. As I went north the temperature rose back to -13C. A weather station a few km further north is another 3C warmer. There was frost between my jacket and mid-layer when I took my jacket off.

The past few years I'd been skipping a mid-layer and just choosing one of several thicknesses of base layer. But now I'm thinking there is a benefit to having a base / mid even if the base is very thin. It seems to improve moisture transfer and creates a bit of a thermal break.

Bring your bikes to Minnesnowta! December was an "old-fashioned" winter month with snow and cold. And it continues in January with another 12" or so today and tomorrow. Fortunately, no sub-zero cold moving in after the storm, which is the usual.

And yes, frost on the inside of a shell is common around here on the colder rides. Makes Gore-tex a bit worthless.

I've been living in Southern New England for 6 going on 7 years. My experience is that winter does not kick in until late January.

Late January - frost
last week of January into the first full week of February (2 week): coldest part of the year, snow is possible but not guaranteed
next 2 weeks of february: snow is likely, freezing rain and graupel possible
last week of February: thaw (70s are possible)
First two weeks of March: snow is likely (Nor'easter's possible)
last two week of March: thaw
April: early spring time

but this year they are saying to expect a lot more weather in winter, perhaps as early as January

Graupel are soft, small pellets formed when supercooled water droplets (at a temperature below 32°F) freeze onto a snow crystal, a process called riming. If the riming is particularly intense, the rimed snow crystal can grow to an appreciable size, but remain less than 0.2 inches.

Stunt and rally driver Kenny Block passed away yesterday in a snowmobile accident near Reno. It was the one day of clear weather for about a week.

I wonder if that's what my daughter ran into, some 15 years ago? She'd flown into a small airport for an interview, and had an early flight out the next day. Instead, she got to sit in that small airport for hours until the "snow pellets" had thawed. Apparently the de-icer was certified for snow, sleet, and hail, but when the meteorologist said they'd had "snow pellets" had fallen, well! Their equipment wasn't approved for that!

not familiar but that's too bad. wonder what the deets are. was poking around the internet & there's lots of info & pics of snowmobile accidents & fatalities. I guess stuff happens when you're racing around w/o roadways, etc like cars have to use

in central CT it's like perma-spring. Just rain, rain and more rain. My kids are disappointed. They want snow.

graupel - yep, around here in January it comes down a lot like a mixture of sleet and heavy wet snow, generally because it's too dry to precipitate and it's too warm to snow. Or replace "Slush" with another S word and you've got a winter storm that hits the fan ;0) LOL - especially when it freezes over night. Try biking in them! - Not fun!

The nearby Route 38 town of Winchester had some cold nights over the holidays. The body of water called Winter Pond froze over to around 2 inches of ice. The next morning some kids went to play ice hockey and someone fell through the ice and died Channel 5 sent a reporter out to cover it. I biked past and noticed that the next day, kids were again out there playing on the ice. I couldn't believe my two eyes.

Here's a link to the Ch 5 coverage of Winter Pond. At the end they advised waiting for the ice to get 4 inches thick, minimum
