Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bottom brackets make my head explode

I just got a 2019 S-Works Tarmac SL6 off ebay. I expected an "OSBB" but it has a BSA. I was planning on pulling most everything off my "classic" Venge but I guess I can't use my S-Works crank, so now I need a new crankset too... What's the deal with "DUB"?

I also need direct mount brakes. I'll probably just get some EE's, change my mind.

Nokons seem to be unobtanium now.

And finally, does anyone make -17 degree stems anymore?

Dub is a sram standard, their original 2-piece design was 22mm/24mm while shimano's was a straight 24mm, dub is a straight 28.9mm that allows for better bearing size and sealing in an english thread bb without giving up too much of the stiffness that a 30mm spindle offered.

Profile still makes -17

I think I'm going to call Specialized in the morning and see if they can tell me if that frame was supposed to have an OSBB/BB30 shell or BSA threads. Maybe there's just an insert wedged in there really well. I don't want to start banging on anything if it's permanently bonded in though.

If I have to stick with the BSA though, I was looking at a BBInfinite since it looks like it can do BB30 or DUB.

Specialized itself offers a 17 degree stem:

S-Works SL Stem with Expander Plug | Specialized.com

You can install it upside down.

Annoyingly, I could not find any documentation or discussion on how Specialized measures their stems (extension vs. reach, etc.). I probably could have dug up some old ones to see what they state vs actual, but I decided to just order the same stuff as my Venge. I order Zipp Service Course SL (120mm +/-17deg), and Zipp Carbon SL-70 Aero (40cm C-C).

For "just get a new frame and swap everything over", this is getting to be a lot more than I had originally planned in my head. BUT I decided I wanted to leave the cockpit intact to make it easier to rebuild later.

I ended up going with Jagwire links instead of Nokon. Mostly because I could get it in blue (I sense a theme...).

The Zipp stem is also $120 but I got it on sale for $90.

I'll pretend I never saw this email...

I wanted the enve aero stem, but the enve stem weighs about 60 grams more, and I just can’t get past the bontrager blendr system. It works awesome, and all my bikes have them. Anyways, zipp sprint is cool too.

The Zipp sprint is actually not available in 17, only 12. I'm not a sprinter anyway

Yeah lol, but I could have gotten my stem for that price. They only had the bars in 44, or I would have returned the ones I got from Biketiresdirect, and bought them from there (Planet Cyclery) instead.

Despite the "extralite" top cap, I'm not really going for an ultra lightweight build. That's just fashion, I have it color-matched on all my bikes. I would assume it will be the same 15lb ballpark as my Venge. I'm way past caring about a few grams here or there.

If it makes you feel better, I started caring too late. 3 of my bikes are in the 18 pound range, the old ass trek might 16 not sure. Now if I need to replace a part I try and go as light as possible. Maybe one day all of my bikes will be 15 pounds. They will probably all be different bikes than I have now, but 15 pounds.

I usually go the other way. For example, I only spring for the super-light cassette when the bike is new. What do you mean these things wear out? $400 for a new one?!? f-that!

edit: I would say it's not that hard to hit 15lbs, but I also just spent nearly $5k and I'm not even getting all new stuff

edit 2: I think I had my old Tarmac SL2 down to around 13lbs at some point.

Well, that's interesting. I've put the parts I've gotten so far together and have sort of a "rolling chassis", that's at 8lbs nearly dead even. Adding up the claimed weights of the rest of the components on order, plus the ones I'm moving over is another ~5.5lbs, for about 13.5 total. I don't think I've forgotten anything.

There are light and durable cassettes that do not cost nearly that much: Prestacycle UniBlock Cassette | 11-Speed Shimano / SRAM /Campagnolo for HG 11 Freehub - Prestacycle

I paid $169 for each of my 12-28 and $107 for my 11-34.

It was only really a problem for me in the past with the Red 10sp stuff. Between many different wheels with different gearing and piles of miles, the Red 1090's got expensive fast, even though I was usually able to find good prices.

Since I switched to 11sp I don't ride enough to wear stuff out

I still have the "original" XG-1190s on both 11sp bikes.

Finished last night and rode it today. Came in right at 14.5* after adding the Quarq and, um..., pedals.

*weight does not include spare tire, pump, water bottle or Garmin.
