Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This one comes up every couple weeks. Some people do. Most people don't.

Cycling shorts are designed to be worn WITHOUT uderwear.

Can-o-worms opened. Let it rip!!!!!!

No you shouldn't as this defeats the purpose of having the unrestricted padding in the cycle shorts to begin with. You don't want anything binding between you and the seat.

At first I use to wear underwear but then thanks to this forum I found out most guys didn't wear them, so I had to try it and found out it was a lot more comfortable.

Never.
If I wore underwear on a ride, I wouldn't be wearing cycling shorts/pants.

It defeats the purpose of the padding, like another mentioned... and I think is just far more harsh on the skin... also potentially less 'sanitary' when it comes to the sweating factor.

Cycling short? No underwear ever!!!
Other clothes? Recent convert to being "comfortable and free".

Somehow I think the UWN will be paying this thread a visit.

Should one wear underwear under one's bicycle shorts?

In a word: no.

In a lot more words: no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no!

Am I making myself clear?

Bicycle shorts are designed to be worn next to the skin. Underwear under bike shorts is unhygenic, unsightly and unsafe. Wearing underwear under padded lycra shorts is like riding with your shorts full of ground glass. It is a one way ticket to chafesville. Don't do it!

Remember the Underwear Nazi manifesto: No underwear under bike shorts for any reason ever. No Excuses.

Got it? Good.

Oh, and did I happen to say "no"?

That sounds like an excuse to me.

If you have three pairs of shorts, shaq-d, you have one to wash, one to wear and one to spare. If you don't want to fire up the washing machine for a small load, then hand wash your shorts in the sink. Or, carry them into the shower with you. Underwear is not the answer.

No excuses!

Ok cool undies are for suckers.
BTW for super smooth motion I shave everything under so its not only extra smooth but also less bacterial.

You should just have a copy and paste paragraph for a standard canned reply to these things.

I wear a pair of wicking seamless smooth synthetic hybrid briefs so I don't get crap (literally) rubbed into my padding. Never bothered me on long rides, your mileage may vary. *DUCKS FOR COVER*

Sounds like you need to wipe better if you're that worried about skid marks

I haven't had skid marks in any of my clothing since I was a wee lad. After all, the job isn't finished until ALL the paperwork is done.

This may seem sacriligious but...................I got rid of the special bike shorts. They were hard to wash and dry and I needed several pairs unless I wanted to do laundry daily.
I got a Brooks B17 saddle and now I can wear shorts/jeans/underwear/pajamas or whatever I want.
