Dogs, dogs, and more dogs!

Just a random rant. People have been complaining a lot on here about ebikes but it seems like post COVID everyone has a dog or two. They are everywhere, on every trail, even the single track trails. This latest generation of young folks seems to be very fascinated with dog ownership. While I do like dogs more than most people the untrained beasts that lunge at me are a far greater obstacle than any ebikes that are out there.

Thoughts?

Ride at your own risk if dogs are near.
I know my Terrier is a chaser.
He is always leashed on walks. no exceptions.

kills me that the neighboring town made a requirement for bells to be required on all bikes on their portion of the canal trail, but no mandates against 15' long dog leashes.

What state are you in? Where I normally ride AZ, OR and WA the leash laws keep this under control, the exception is WY where local communities might have leash laws but not in our rural area. Enforcement is another matter but generally most cities, counties, towns, boroughs, districts and municipalities are effective at controlling the problem.

I'm in CT. There are leash laws everywhere (I don't think the signs mention length). A 15+ foot long leash does not offer proper control.

Over 400 homes in our subdivision and most have a dog(s). I've either been very lucky or most are responsible dog "parents". I think the latter. Sure wish all with pets were as thoughtful.
Edit--we also live close to a heavily used MUP. Have been lucky there also--except for owners that don't pick up after pooch--and no excuse-there are stations with bags supplied.

I'm in IL.... The people here are pretty good about keeping the dogs on a short leash. Even without ever seeing it happen firsthand, I think most people can visualize in their minds what might happen if a bike strikes an outstretched leash midway between a dog and its walker.

In Kentucky?? I vividly remember the day seven hounds from three houses came chasing me on the TransAm. Fortunately for me, while my bike was heavily loaded, I was going downhill so I outran the whole pack!

That may still happen in more rural areas, or where there are large farms and the dogs roam loose.

Dogs can be a nuisance but all you really need to do is squirt them in the face with your water bottle and their pursuit usually ends right there.. Some carry mace but I find a blast of water runs them off just as well..

Talking? I mean, that's not ideal, but it's better than one that's checking on their social media accounts.

I had a Great Dane come at me two days ago. I ignored him. He didn’t chase me down because he saw I was moving away from “his” turf. I was going uphill on a fully loaded bike, so it’s not like I could have outrun him. It was probably the third type of encounter in as many days.

Could it possibly be that dogs aren’t usually trying to harms us? For the ones who get too close, as squirt of water (as mentioned above) or yelling at them really loudly has always worked for me. Show them who’s top dog.

In my experience, most of them just want to run alongside a fast-moving object. In twenty years, I've only encountered two dogs that were actual problems. One was a problem on a regular route, so I called the Sheriff's Dept and the problem was solved. With the other, I had an opportunity to speak with the homeowner, and the problem was solved.

I walk my wife's Pekingese on a retractible leash. I don't know how long it is but it isn't that hard to reign her in.

Finally, I have proof that it is our dog ordering bike parts, not me.

You need to feed your Peke some steroids ! Mine was impossible to keep reigned in when she wore her US National Team sweater !

Kidding - but mentioning Pekes made me get a bit heartbroken over my Buttercup -- she passed last year from natural causes but epitomized "little dog syndrome" when she was younger

These 2 were best friends but that didnt stop a 3-4x size difference from letting her get her bluff in

____________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________

Fast forward to today -- this twerp, Grace , is only 20 pounds but is a handful and can wriggle out of any leash or harness arrangement if she is determined enough, and fights on the end of a leash like a 50 pound Tarpon on light tackle
