I’ve some pedals with pitted races, but perfect black anodized cages.

I also have some nice spindles and races but the cages are squished.

what are these? Rivets? Can they be cleanly removed and re-used? Replaced with titanium screws?

or must I toss both and start over.

The spindles that the spin on can be removed and serviced, but the cages cannot; those are swedged on. If you did grind off the swedging, you won't be able to reinstall them and would likely scratch the black anodizing anyway.

You're better off using the proper dustcap removal tool to regrind and repolish the raceways. I completely forgot that the raceways are press-fit on these. They can be swapped if you have the right tools and a press.

Alternatively, sell both pedals and use the profits to get one nice set.

I haven't done it but I hear some have replaced the cups in those.

The cups can be punched out and replaced. Similar tools and technique as for replacing cartridge bearings. Donor cups come from mangled Campy pedals.

IIRC, Record pedals have different cup dimensions than the lesser models such as Chorus, Triomphe, Victory etc.

the set with the mangled cages are panto’d colnago. So I was really hoping to replace the cages.

A bike shop with a Euro-Asia account can check and confirm part availability and prices. They're not likely to be cheap.

Years ago, my LBS's owner (a former racer with extensive experience, he's now 90 years old) had removed and replaced the cups in my Campy pedals. It wasn't easy, but it was do-able.

eBay does show bearing press-out (punch out) tools available. A long (thin enough) threaded rod with nuts and spacers attached can be used to screw-press in the new cups, by using the old cups turned upside down against the new cups, to use as pushing tools.

I agree with the other BF posters: Buying better pedals is the easiest and most reliable option.

How badly are the cages squished? Are they scratched or gouged?

You may be able to straighten out the bent cages.

The cages are bent and scratched up. You can’t paint on top of anodized or it looks stupid.

Guess I’ll throw them away and try to find a new pair.

The way Jim Merz replaces cages on Campy pedals is a marvel. He machines out the posts where they're swaged on, and reattaches the cages with screws that go in where the posts were. The last stp is where he machines off the screw heads so you can't tell they're screws. They look almost indistiguishable from the original swaged posts.

AFAIK he only does this for himself. If he charged any kind of hourly rate commensurate with his skill and the expensive machines he uses, it would be way too expensive for anyone not named Elon

Here's a Super Record pedal where he replaced the road cages with BMX, for an early Merz MTB restoration. I'm pretty sure he made the cages too.
