Discuss clothing. sweetmeats, fabric choice, how to look smart wearing a bowler hat etc.

Those haberdashers are morons. There are SOOOO many better things to be selling people while commuting on your bike. Like "Haberdashersbedamned!" t-shirts...

I use my wheel most often, but occasionally I rather enjoy hiring a handsome for traveling about town.

All the rider agents and Winston Churchhill pretenders would be best served to start their own threads. This thread is for haberdashers and the unique problems that face us. It is hard enough to look smart on a safety bicycle without you interlopers starting all this tomfoolery.

I am not a haberdasher but do have a keen interest in the topic. Perhaps one of the haberdashers on this forum could suggest some suitable attire to wear whilst riding one's velocipede; knee breeches with gaiters or jodhpurs, Donegal tweed or cavalry twill, perhaps moleskin? And what sort of headgear for country ride, a deerstalker or a flat cap? And for riding in town a coatguard on one's machine is essential, one wouldn't want to the tails of his cutaway coat engaged in the spokes of his bicycle. So many questions. I await your sage advice on this topic with baited breath.

I say, Haberdashery has been a bit slow as of late, what with all those pesky box stores selling thread and all manner of whatnot. I mean seriously, can one begin to announce themselves as a qualified Haberdasher, if they simply work in the craft section of an X-mart… I think not !… It’s giving the true haberdasher a bad name, I fear.

Oh well, back to the grind I suppose…these trousers won’t mend them bloody selves… someday those Box stores will get their comeuppance, and a jolly good time that will be, what...

I think you should limit it to those commuting haberdashers who commute on commuter type bikes, or next thing you know you'll have a bunch of recumbent haberdasher commuters in here and who knows where those sorts of things lead.....

EDIT: I'm thinking of all the wrinkles and creases they'll be bringing...

"Blazing summer becomes boon for haberdashers

Thursday 14th August, 07:14 AM JST
TOKYO —
As the nation languishes in sweltering summer heat, a rather unusual consumer item is selling briskly—men’s hats, according to store officials and market watchers. While many Japanese men often go hatless on outings on hot summer days, holidaymakers are now being compelled to travel on foot or use public transit rather than drive because of sky-high gasoline prices. This has prompted more men to don headgear. Consumers are skimping as product prices in general are rising due to higher materials costs, while personal income is hardly growing. But items used to save money seem to be in much demand.

Sales of men’s hats at Seibu Department Stores Ltd.’s flagship store in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, more than doubled in July from a year earlier, with not only seniors but also men in their 30s and 40s buying them, Seibu officials say. Buyers include salesmen who make their rounds by bicycle and those who are now riding trains and buses as they minimize use of their cars. ‘‘Men buying hats have become an indicator of how consumers are tightening their belts,’’ says Sakae Kumagai, a sales promotion official at the store. Collapsible hats, which users can take out of their bags when necessary, are selling well, according to the Seibu officials. Foldable Panama hats are in strong demand at Toraya, a venerable hat retailer in Tokyo’s posh Ginza district, a salesperson says. ‘‘Even first-time users feel quite comfortable with them.’’ ‘‘Hats have become a necessity in summer for today’s middle-aged and older men as many of whom are quite fashion-conscious and often go out with their wives,’’ says Mitsuhiro Yokoyama, a senior official of the Tokyo Hat Club, an industry body."

I am wont to don a flat cap whilst commuting via two-wheeled hellbeast. Tan during the more agreeable months, and black wool during the frigid times. As I reside in the desert, a bandanna reminiscent of that worn by the wild men of the untamed frontiers is seated upon my melon during the warmest portions of the year.
