Which Quill Stem looks best?

Cold and snowy so I'm messing around with the Fauto Coppi. Trying to keep this to a "parts on hand" build. Decided to go with a silver Dura Ace 7700/7800 mix as long as all is compatible.

But the stem needs to be a 90mm range and I have few options. I think a Mutant would look good on this but the NOS one I have is 130mm, way too long. Also like a Deda Murex on this but can't find a 90mm anywhere. Of course a Grammo would be hot too but those are crazy money.

This is what I live best of what I have. I think this is a profile design. The wheels are Dura Ace/Open Pro with gold nipples.

Cinelli stem

This is an old, heavy Sakae stem

These are the parts except for the gummed up 7800 STI shifters that have been revived but are still soaking. Just to give an idea of what's going on the bike to match the stem.

I should add, I'm pairing this with a Some Hwy One bar I did order. The older I get the more I like the compact bars.

So what do ya'll think? Does that chunky stem work on this chunky frame?

If you don't have/can't find a Dura Ace stem, then the Cinelli is clearly the next best thing.

+ 1 on the Cinelli, though the Profile looks period correct as well.

Welded quill stems should be nowhere near a road bike.

To paraphrase Renoir, "to my mind, a [road bike stem] should be something pleasant, cheerful, and pretty, yes, pretty! There are too may unpleasant things in life as it is without creating still more of them."

Cinelli, profile design looks bloated, even the big tubes

I totally agree with Cinelli if it's the right size, I happen to like simple, classic looking stems in that spirit, like the current Nitto Pearl and Technomic Deluxe. But for my Italian frame, I stuck with Italian and between Cinelli and 3T, went with 3T because I first found a very nice shiny NOS 3t bar in a size and shape I liked, and then of course wanted to "match" the stem and subsequently found a NOS stem. There's so many versions of 3T stems and nomenclature, I couldn't even tell you the name of the version I have, but it's this one. Less classic looking than your Cinelli, but nice:

It would be nice to match the Dura Ace stuff, but good luck finding a Dura Ace quill stem.

Of course, you should just bag the "on hand" idea and find some version of a Campy group to use!

The nearly hidden binder bolt on the Cinelli R1 is the clincher for me.

I agree with the Cinelli classic 1A, but some welded stems are pretty cool.

I just acquired a Dura Ace with an 80 reach I could part with. The plastic plug has a chip on it. Aluminum ones are available. I see these go for some high bucks.

Don't get the Deda Murex one- that 2 bolt face plate design is no good. It rocks like crazy when you are standing and climbing.

The Cinelli Grammo stem would suit the style of your frame (IMO). The more classic stems are better suited to lugged frames.

I should have mentioned that the only reason the Cinelli isn't my favorite is that I can't get it to release the handlebars. I can take that hidden bolt all the way out and the bars are locked in place. I've soaked it repeatedly with PB Blaster with no luck. I'd just hate to use it and suddenly have something go wrong like the bars come free or something. I mean that shouldn't happen with the bolt all the way in but I just feel uncomfortable trusting a stem I can't fully service.

The Profile one isn't horrible but if it were horizontal instead of upward rising that might look less dorky and more racer. Syncros made some stems like that that were chunky and cool. Since you like the look of a Cinelli but don't care for the clamping mechanism could you spec a Nitto Pearl (Cinelli clone) stem for this build?

Nope, to be honest not the case. I'm running a couple of them without this problem. When you mount them be sure to butt the inside clamp piece solid against the body. Then the outer bolt is torqued down to hold the handlebar into place. Many folks try to even out the tension on the two clamp bolt which then does lead to problems like you're saying.

stem is a fit item
what's gonna look good is you riding it
personally I don't like riding that much bar drop so i'd pick the ugly one with more rise

I bet the Profile is a bit lighter than the Cinelli - but I'd still use the Cinelli!! Nature abhors a welded aluminum quill stem.

You can find original caps in both plastic and metal, and there are also no-name copies that would look fine.

I would think the 90 degree vs -17 degree would be based on fit more so than aesthetics. I have a lot of 90 degree stemmed road bikes but only because it’s that or a long-quilled Technomic. Or a bigger frame of course.
