Built A Bike Stand Today

One of the obstacles of commuting is making sure you are prepared and then getting out the door. Each year when I get my bike out and ride I have to park it way off to the side or behind things. 100% of the time it’s a pain. So … I buil a bike rack out of pvc pipe. I haven’t glued it yet, nor have I put any sand in the bottom pipe to add stability, but I think it will work just fine.

I based my design on someone else's and linked to it in the below post over in Clydesales & Athenas.

PVC is certainly functional, and pretty inexpensive, but trends a bit too utilitarian for me. I stick to wood. But then again, I have pretty much all of the tools.

First stand I made for my wife:

I tend to stick to a knock-down design now, I've made a handful.

Very cool designs. I like the PVC just because I can see leaving and using it outside all winter to spray down my bike without having to lean it against the kids' basketball post. The more stylish ones just wooden work

Nah, I make bike stands out of literally whatever scraps I can find. The sides of the stand in the last pic are cut out of an Ikea shelf. I put a little more effort into cutting boards:

Very nice, @DrIsotope, you have some abilities that are beyond me.

As for what I just produced, I have to modify it. I just put on the Topeak rear rack and now the rear wheel won't fit in there. I've already got a modification in mind, I just have to see if they make the pvc elbow I'm wanting.

A PVC stand, similar to the one you made, was my first bike stand. However, I have since replaced it with a superstand I got for cheap, plus an additional superstand knock off. These stands did not cost much more than the materials needed to make the PVC, but I did already have the PVC pipes from putting in sprinklers a few years back which is why I made one.

The biggest downfall of the PVC stand was the footprint it required. I didn't use glue or sand with mine and it held the bike fine. If you don't use glue, it is easily customizable for wheel size.

I am absolutely (and shamelessly) stealing your knock-down stand design idea. Good stuff!

I heartily encourage it-- if you need any other pics, or dimensions or anything, just let me know.
