Rear tire assembly

Was curious about the parts needed inside a rear tire hub for a cruiser bike of mine. The hub is completely empty/ clear of any parts inside.

(just joined so won’t be able to show pictures yet)

Welcome to the forums! This site has reproductions (with permission) of the famous Sutherlands manuals for historical hubs. Perusal of the single speed hubs will probably turn up something that resembles yours.

https://www.sheldonbrown.com/sutherland.html

Did you disassemble it, or are the parts missing? These hubs are not rocket science to service, but outside of the name brands it might be hard to find parts of the exact dimensions needed. Sometimes someone sells just the guts of a coaster hub on eBay.

I have a Bendix and a Shimano on two bikes.

The hub itself is on but the parts that you’d find inside the hub, what attaches the wheel to the bike frame, are missing

Does it have any kind of brand markings? Unfortunately, for many hubs, the brand is stamped into the reaction arm, which is one of the parts that's missing.

If it's an X-Mart type bike, you're probably out of luck unless you can find a donor hub/wheel from the same brand/production run.

Bike brand

The bike brand is an Ozone Malibu. The tire sizes are 26x2.125 and the rims look smaller than 26 inch. More like 24 inch compared to my other mountain bike.

If 26 x 2.125 tires are mounted on the wheel, then the rim is 26”.

Are the axle and bearing parts missing from the hub?

The Sheldon Brown site has a good explanation of tire and rim sizes. The American version of tire sizing are what I will call "nominal" references, not actual measurements. Unlike the auto world where the tire is called out by actual rim dimensions.

Has the OP tried to search for a bike spec list on line yet? If the bike's specs are published the brand of the rear hub might be listed.

A new replacement wheel might cost $40-60 from a LBS. If the current hub's were to be found then that likely would cost less. But it only takes one incorrect choice and purchase of a second collection of, maybe this time correct, parts to make the repair costs get real close to the replacement wheel. Also after finding the correct parts (which is questionable) the OP will then find out the condition of the spokes/rim trueness. It will be a shame if they are in poor shape (and maybe the reason that this wheel was available with no internal hub parts any more). Andy

Indeed, part of doing DIY maintenance is knowing when the odds are worth the gamble.

I agree with Andrew, that a new or even used wheel is a better gamble. Is there a bike co-op in your locale?

JanMM yes the bearings are missing from hub. The axle is somewhat intact I think, can I message you the pictures, if it lets me?

OP...take the wheel to a bike shop and have them sort it rather than going back and forth here w/ no photos for any of us to use.

Did I read that the parts inside the hub were missing. Then read that the bearings were missing and the axle was there? Excuse my confusion as to what is really there. Andy

It's a place, usually operated as a non-profit and staffed by volunteers, that provides community support for bikes. If one exists, they often have piles of old donated parts, and people who can provide assistance and advice.

I use my local bike co-op as a source of oddball parts for my old bikes. They have piles of free parts, but I always make a donation roughly equal to what I'd pay for a part from eBay or a shop.

So I got a couple parts, bearings, brake and sprocket which seems that it’s a bendix style, from what I saw on YouTube. but it looks like wheel doesn’t move and the chain stays in place.

So there’s no co-op near me, that I’ve searched, I talked to bike repair places and they said they cant do anything with it. Hard to believe. I also looked up the specs and only found them on the Academy website, but nothing about the hub specs, besides saying it’s a cruiser brake style. This bike isn’t sold at an x-Mart, was only at academy but probably the same quality? I don’t know the difference, except all I’m hearing is that Walmart bikes are trash lol.

Update

So the reverse brake part is what’s broken, what the sprocket spins and locks into. Ordered the new part. Ordering the bearings too, the hub itself is a “thick” rounded one and not a skinny kind of hub.

You can upload pics to the gallery here on BF, then let us know they are there. Every user get their own album.... even noobls.

A few more posts and maybe a day later then you too can put pics and vids in your post.

I’m going to a bike shop today, hopefully they’ll actually say something more than “we cannot fix this”

Missing 2 end nuts for the axle and need another bearing part, I think, the brake mechanism is broken though.

Wow! After thinking we were talking about a pedal bike's hub we find out it's a powered modded one. Way to be forth coming. Andy
