I got a ca. 1987 Fiori San Remo from my brother in ~1990 or 91. I converted it to a coaster brake for winter use and it is now in the possession of my friend, although he had a stroke earlier this year and can't ride it (not that he was riding it before the stroke).

My memory has been telling me for years it was a Murray but the down tube says SCOUT which turns out is a Huffy model name. That was the missing piece of the puzzle. Holy cow, here's a survivor that was sold on Offer Up. So much chrome! Now if only I could figure out if the Novara bike following this one was an Arriba or an Arroyo

1991 Cannondale SM700 - Black with green speckles, a lot like this...
The seat stay got crushed like a beer can when I tipped over in a rock garden. The frame was replaced under C-dales' crash replacement policy. The second frame suffered the same fate as the first, but in a higher-speed incident. After that, I switched to Trek OCLV frames.

Technically, my first was some rigid early 90's Jamis MTB. Might have been a Dakota. I got it sometime around 1996.
But my first REAL MTB (the one that got me into serious trail riding) was an 1994 GT Timberline frame with a Specialized Future Shock (rebranded Mag-21) that I bought used sometime around 1997. I ended up upgrading a bunch on that bike before I bought a Santa Cruz Superlight frame in 2000 and moved all the parts over to that.
I regret not having any pictures of that bike from the few years that it was my primary MTB, or even one of the frame's many incarnations over the years that followed. All I have is this picture of the frame before I donated it to someone a few years ago:

I was pushing my Mongoose BMX bike up the hills in the south bay in '77 complaining, "Why don't they put GEARS on these things!" Coulda, woulda, shoulda!
My first mountain bike was a 1984 Peugeot Canyon Express. Hilarious that my first mountain bike, living in the bay area, is a FRENCH bike! WTF was I thinking? (I know what I was thinking... I was a broke high school kid who could never afford a "cool" bike.) But that bike got promptly stolen, so I replaced it with something a bit better, a Crack-N-Fail SM400 (0r 500). 24/26" bike with roller cams (SunTour, of course). But I put in the miles on that bike and didn't let it get stolen! I still have that original frame after it broke (Dremeled out the SSN and mailed it to Cannondale to get the warranty but not give up my then-custom painted frame.)
I was looking at this to see how many posters would beat my '84 date and you blow us ALL out of the water!
Kudos and thanks for the amazing ride!!!

Well what do you know!
Ha, ha, my first mountain bike as well! Mine was stolen from UC Berkeley in '85 and returned to me in around '89 after the San Leandro police found a kid on it riding at night with no lights.

Mine was a 1991 Bridgestone MB-2, purchased used from a schoolmate in 1992 for a price that in retrospect suggests it was likely stolen. Quickly displaced the Ross Signature series road bike that was my first geared bike. I didn't really appreciate how nice a bike it was until I had ridden it to death and wanted to replace it with something comparable.

1985 stumpjumper. I still have it. Until 2010(I think?), it was my newest bike

This one, built for me by an old friend.
It now lives on at hook at Rock Lobster world headquarters but is taken down once in a while for special occasions.

2003 Specialized Rockhopper Comp FSR. Size L. Too big for me but had no clue what i was doing. Just that is was on a major discount b/c it was a couple of years old (though brand new). Bought in 2005. Sold in 2018 for $175. was thinking - hey I'll get some person with no money in the game! Ended up - I'm sure sold it to a re-seller who profited.

My first mountain bike was a Giant ATX hardtail. Heavy as a boulder but it was a good learning experience. I just upgraded to an Ibis Mojo & dayum is that a difference!

My first "mountain" bike was a Gary Fisher bike I bought in 1985. It worked well enough for the fire roads in Marin county and surrounding areas but was more of a heavy duty cyclocross bike other than the tires. Cyclocross bikes were not being sold into the USA then nor are they now although "gravel bikes" are similar in many respects.
What has been interesting to me is how in the 1970's it was a contest between the French and Italian bike and component manufacturers and then the Japanese entered the picture and now dominate the bike components market and the largest bike manufacturer in the world is the Taiwanese company Giant.

I had a 1992 Kona Fire Mountain in black. Worse mountain bike I've ever owned, couldn't wait to get rid of it. I have been known to still ride it very occasionally...

In 1991 I bought a Huffy Stone Mountain.
Instantly fell in love and rode that thing into the ground. In November 1993 the day after Thanksgiving I bought a black Trek 8000 for exactly $1000. When I picked it up I was blown away with how light it was. Still one of the lightest MTB's I ever had.
