1.5" upper headset internal – do these even exist!?

Help! I've gone and ordered a custom frame with a straight 1.5" head tube because I thought it looked cool. It's an integrated headset standard. Now the frame is done and I can't seem to find any 1.5" uppers for sale anywhere. Do these even exist? What am I not seeing here? Any advice much appreciated.

Andy

Off the cuff.

Did you check to see if the design uses the same bearing, upper and lower?

It's very common to see the same bearing in both positions, with one upside down, so you may be in luck.

I am not familiar with a 38.1 head tube. 1.5" is small for an integrated system.

OP, is there a name for a 1.5" integrated headset standard? According to this, the only thing that sounds close is IS38, which is for 1" fork steerers.

1.5” was the Cannondale standard for mountain bikes using a Headshok or Lefty fork and the parts can still be found though I do not know if the OD of the cup flanges is a match for your frame. If so you may be able to get a head set meant to convert a Cannondale to a 1 1/8” fork and use the upper assembly to mount a modern fork.

What frame did you order and what are the listed specs for the headset for that (which your builder would be able to tell you) Also what fork are you running? These are all important questions which should have been answered in post #1.

Ask the guy who built it. Surely he must know.

You were quoting the designer.

It is an IS52 standard. This is commonplace for the lower headset of a tapered headset design, however the builder just used the same standard for the upper which as I discovered is unconventional. The builder took it as a special request and due to my misguided assumption I thought it was a ‘normal’ to mix and match upper diameters...

I know. Most builders have a headset spec in mind before they start cutting and welding metal.

So it isn't a 1.5" headtube. IS52 is a 1.5" steerer tube on the lower.

You got what you paid for. There might be a bearing/cap/wedge combo that will work with some sort of fork, but I would hate to even have to look for it.

I have a Rockshox fork here For A CANNONDALE, used as a replacement for a Headshok Bike's fork.. the Headset needed to install it fits a Steerer tube of 39.7mm bottom, 38.1mm top... Here's a headset to fit it correctly to a 'Cannondale 1.5" ' headtube frame.. very possibly what the Frame you have is designed to use... https://www.ebay.com/itm/22394618067...Bk9SR4CUyMG4YQ
