In the Everyman category I would also nominate the Peugeot UO-8 and the Fuji S-10-S, a couple of bike boom staples. The black Raleigh roadster with twin top tubes and rod brakes must also qualify on a planetary level. Versions of it were for a long time the most common bike in places like Mexico, India and China.

First Peugeot I ever saw was a car.
If someone had told me they made bikes, I wouldn't have wanted one.
After reading the posts, I have to agree, the electro forged Schwinn "10-speeds" were kind of the iconic bike of my teen years.
Few around my town could afford them, but we all knew what they were. We settled for Free Spirits and K-mart AllSports.
Then again, Crazy TV Lenny at American TV gave away thousands of Firenze bikes. I remember getting 4 or 5 at one time.
A window unit AC, a dorm fridge, a boom box, a set of speakers, and I think a car stereo. That promotion was iconic in itself.
My boss asked me to give them the once-over, so I wiped them down, adjusted brakes and gearing, tightened the bolts.
We lined them up outside the gas station and sold them for $50/each. Pick a color.

Early 'Dales are very cool, the giant downtubes stand out, even next to modern bikes. The Black Lightning would probably be the hero/halo model; a track bike with gears and brakes, it was a badass back in the day.

Not only were they raced at the highest levels, notably by Sean Kelly and his many victories, but they were also accessible to the masses. In my experience, it was hard to find a large group ride in the 80s without several Vitus riders. They were light, relatively affordable, and (subjectively) attractive with lots of different shades of anodized alum. My first race bike was a sky blue Vitus, so I'm biased.

I saw one done like that a few years back; an '88 kitted with full 5800-series 105 (in black, of course) and modern wheels. Serious hot-rod, that one.

Of course, everyone has their own personal ‘icons’ & grail bikes, but what (road) bikes have the kind of iconic status of the Peugeot PX-10? A late 60s- mid 70s white PX-10 is immediately recognizable and conjures a nostalgia even among folks who haven’t ridden a bike in years. I have a hard time coming up with other models that have that kind of iconic singularity. An all-chrome Paramount, maybe? A celeste-green Bianchi (though that isn’t a specific model….)? What other near-instantly recognizable classic & vintage icons are there?
I never saw a PX-10 on the street or at the campus at U of MD, but I did see an endless parade of UO-8's.
If ubiquitous is at all synonymous with "iconic", the UO-8 is right up there with the Varsity on the list.
In the prior decade, if you didn't have a Schwinn (because they cost more), your parents bought you a Raleigh built 3 speed, one of the "Sports" cones. Those suckers were everywhere, where I lived on the East coast.
