Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

All I can tell you is that I will be going to Afghanistan in a few months for at least 7 months. I am a mechanic in the Army.

That's what's going to be tricky about this.
No one knows that info until they themselves get it.
Then there's going to be transitioning time needed.

But, speaking for myself, as soon as we get some contact info from you guys serving overseas,
I'll do my best to secure what you can use out there.

Currently in Afghanistan for a 9 month tour. There are bikes here but they are huffy type bikes. High theft rate too. It's winter and it's cold as b*lls with snow on the ground. However, we're in a valley surrounded by beautiful mountains. I haven't ridden my bike since October and man does it suck. I'm up about 15 lbs with quite a bitof fitness lost. Just now getting into a routine though and should ahve some fitness back shortly. We have a few cycling mags available where I am believe it or not but not many. Would love to meet up with any other members currently in country. Shoot me a PM.

Cheers

Where is she stationed at? I was in Gwang Ju in 2001/02 and took two bikes with me and there really is some good/challenging rides over there. 99% of the time I rode alone and never really had any problems. Execpt the one time I took a wrong turn and ended up two mountains over from base, turned out to be a long day. Wish I had a good GPS at the time but eventually I ended up using a very out dated topo map the pilots would use. Never got lost after that. I wish her luck!!

Thought I should drop a line in here. I've just hit my 6 year anniversary serving in the USAF. I was stationed in Florida for 4 years where I did 3 tours of Iraq (10 months total). I volunteered for a special duty assignment to wind up where I'm at now.

Currently I am stationed at a small Belgian Air Force base and loving it!! Belgium is an awesome place to ride if you ever get the chance. Although just a beginner cyclist, I jumped in the deep end and spent a lot on my first bike and haven't looked back. I have biked about 1,400 miles on Belgian pavement since last May when I got my bike and I can say after riding in California with my uncle this December that nothing beats the cycling atmosphere here.

I recently purchased a ContourHD and soon I'll be making videos, I'll put some on youtube so everyone here can see what it's like. I have found a Dutch website of the bike path network of Belgium/Netherlands. Search for "Neerpelt" to see where I live (I live in Overpelt). If anyone has any ideas on where I should ride let me know and I'll try to make the trip.

If you ever get the chance to make it anywhere in Europe hit me up, I'll be in Belgium until September 2013. Thanks for everyone's continued support of the Armed Forces

It all depends on your AFSC, aka MOS, or Rating. There are some jobs where you can only be stationed at all of 6 bases, then there's some jobs where you can go just about anywhere in the world.

Very cool idea, 2ndGen. It looks like my deployment to AFG was cancelled (the hospital I was going to be staffing downsized my job away), but it's great to know the guys/gals on BF are doing stuff like this.

FYI:
I am already hooking-up one of our own overseas.
Anyone else, feel free to PM me with your address.
I'm looking to start sending out stuff in February.
(I've been outrageously busy lately, but we're going to make this happen.)

Thanks.

With the NARMY. Navy/Army joint mission. There's a few who would love old road/mtn mags, catalogs, and things like shot blocks. I'll PM you my address.

Cheers

Holy crap, I can't believe I missed this thread! Totally awesome idea!

2nd Gen, I think I might be the guy you were looking for. I deployed [Army] at the beginning of December, and I think I mentioned it in a thread on here in November that you responded to.

I'm now at a tiny firebase roughly sling-shot range from Pakistan. We are an exceptionally small-sized element [Infantry squad attached to a Special Forces team], and our facilities reflect that! There is one stationary bike here, but the saddle rails are bent and the resistance unit is gone. Luckily we have a treadmill that works, but the cycling withdrawal is getting a bit out of hand. I've been brewing up spreadsheets with data on tons of possible component combinations for my post-deployment dream bike build. Leaning towards a C'dale Evo tricked out with Zipps and either SR11 or the new Red, with all the fixins to come out sub-13lbs.

I'm pretty well taken care of with care packages from my family, but if anyone has an abundance of road cycling mags laying around, I sure wouldn't turn them down!

And JT, yes! That would be you!
Thanks for the inspiration brother.

Might be headed out to AFG after all. Nothing official yet. How hard is it to ship a bike and trainer to APO, I wonder?

I've seen a few people riding around on what appear to be personal road bikes. The air quality is so bad where I'm at that I refuse to do fitness outside but it's doable.

Same boat as you. Had orders to Afghanistan (Afghan Prev Med Advisor), cancelled 2 days before CST. Pretty bummed initially but kinda glad now given recent events.

I'd be glad to forward all my magazines, both subscription and off the stand buys, to someone deployed if they would like them. Just shoot me a P.M with your APO and I'll figure out a way to send them to you every month if that is permitted. A little emergency bicycle road riding fix kit, if you will. Just this decrepit old Marine's way of saying thanks for protecting our freedoms and going in harm's way. First P.M date mark gets them.
