Addiction 2022.2

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I may or may not be qualified to say they're a nice experience, especially with a beer or two to smooth out the anxiety which hallucinogens can produce in anxious people.

There is some research in this area, but typically it has been for patients that are terminally ill. Apparently some people find it quite a spiritual experience. But it can scare the CRAP out of you too, possibly. I will pass for now.

There is some literature and lots of anecdote on therapy for grief and trauma too. Caution is always advised. I predict FDA approval of psilocybin and/or MDMA for limited indications within a few years.

Much like the Office Park speed records have fallen, the computing exaflop barrier has been shattered in nearby Oak Ridge.

Thanks. I didn't realize it was coming this way.I'll have to do some checking around.
Edit: NOAA indicates there will be nothing. We are experiencing our normal easterly winds today.
But I will keep my ear to the ground.

I have taken up cannabis for the first time in 20+ years. I stopped because it made me catatonic for hours on end. Nowadays I fill a tiny pipe with a small bit of leaf and take one tiny toke.. It is quite conducive to bike wrenching, I have found. Or other activities that require a bit of focus and a bit of drive. Like the limes, it is home grown.

I remember once, I caught a hint of a coming BIG reversal at a previous company, and I was working myself up to a panic attack, and took a Xanax, then went out with Mrs. GJ for a walk around the block. At first I was so wired that I had to keep stopping for her to catch up. Then it was like someone threw a blanket over my mind, and the anxieties and unhappy thoughts winked out one by one. It was such a comforting feeling having no anxieties that it scared the hell out of me. I could see how people find the oblivion of some drugs addictive.

I know I'm late but the fastest I've seen on my speedo on a bike was 81. kmh. On a fully loaded recumbent touring bike. It was a nice hill with no sharp corners and I took the lane and let the bike roll. I kept my hands well away from the brake levers. At that speed grabbing a brake is only going to end badly.
I've gone faster on my old Mercian road bike but it didn't have a speedo on it at teh time. Similar road: steepish with a good runout. There were a group of us and we all bombed down the hill. The fastest person got to 89kmh and the slowest was doing 83kmh. I was in the middle so was going somewhere between the two.

My sister gave me half a Xanax, to get through my dad's funeral. I was a bit too relaxed for the occasion, but I'm still glad I had it.
I had sworn off all funerals many years earlier. This one, of course, had to be attended.

I dislike both classes of drug, personally. I use scopolamine patches when I'm out on the ocean and I'm not fond of that stuff either.

Years ago, I encountered a chronically ill patient who had become intensely dependent on diphenhydramine (Benadryl) after receiving with many infusions of some blood product. She became quite obstreperous when it was withheld, but I couldn't see the harm in it given what her life was like. Her doctors and the consulting shrink disagreed.

When my Grandmother was 97, the new doctor in the Mennonite Home decided to take her off some drug she was on because 'she wasn't as active as he'd like'. When Mom told me that I wondered how active was she supposed to be given most people her age have been dead for 20 years.

I think you were right, and they were wrong. But you have to pick your battles. I personally don't love patients to take benadryl but at a certain point you have to focus on quality of life with vs without the stuff.

Psychiatrist mellowed her out with a homeopathic dose of some antipsychotic. She seemed to like it, so what do I know?

It's a bit sedating so might not be good to use daily. Especially for the elderly. That said, I have some patients with insomnia who take this every night to sleep. I tell them it's not good for them, but probably only a little bad.

This is what I've done for my non-sourdough loaves... but, hopefully, the starter that I'm cultivating will be ready for showtime within another day or two.
