Vintage Sturmey Archer 5 speed hub slipping

Having trouble with my 5 speed Sturmey Archer slipping on the non drive side. When I start to peddle hard the left side shift lever slips and the gears slip into a almost neutral position. There no way to tighten the shifter lever and the lever at the hub that pushes the pin in to shift the gears only had a small amount of movement available. So it seems like it only pushes the gears in a small amount. Anyone have any experience with these hubs? Thank you

S-5 hub? What shifters are you using?

Sorry should have included that. It’s on a Robin Hood made by Raleigh. I’m not sure on the exact year but I believe it to be around 1966. It’s called the S5 5 speed hub with bell crank. The shifter just says SA on it.

I don't have a good answer but here's some info on your hub. Note the comments regarding the shifters.

If you have the original plastic shifters my experience is they don't hold gear well and there isn't a way to "tighten" them as they are riveted.

The bell crank on the left side doesn't move much. Most likely your issue is a shifter issue rather than a hub issue.

They're not all that much different than the 3 speed and a number of videos etc out there.

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering if that was the issue. I found a couple shifters online that seem fairly similar so I’ll give that a try. I appreciate the help!!

@Nhol36 thanks for posting your issue with your Sturmey Archer 5 speed hub here. Let us know how the new shifter works or if you still have the problem. It can be helpful to anybody else that encounters similar problems to know what the fix is.

We like pictures here at BikeForums. So, get 10 posts anywhere on BikeForums and post a picture of your Robinhood, 5 speed hub and shifter here on this thread.

Sturmey Archer AW's are so popular that we don't get to see too many of the other variety of hubs or talk about them.

I'd start by squirting a bunch of WD-40 into the bell crank side, first removing the push rod. Things might just be hanging up a bit given that as others have pointed out, the bell crank doesn't really do much other than push that rod just a bit, so it's hard to imagine it's a shifter problem.
