New single speed

I just bought a 2009 Cannondale Capo, deal was ok, I like the looks of the bike. I passed on the set of stock wheels that were to come with it.
Anyone have any experience with them? I'm hoping to jump the tire size up to 28 from the factory 25's, I got away with that on my Wabi with no issue.

No pictures yet but coming soon!

I've read somewhere that the fork crown clearance is tight even with 25s.

I read the same post, I believe it was here from a few years back.

I'd imagine I'll be looking for a different fork anyway based on some of the comments about the stock gear on the bike ( and crank and seatpost, etc)

it should arrive in a few days and I'll know more. I have my Wabi so dialed in right now I need
a project , always looking for the perfect bike but never finding it, fortunately.

I love my Wabi!

I need a bunch of bikes though, it's my main thing. I am expecting the Capo to weigh in about 2 lbs less than the Wabi, which would be fun. Also I can keep one bike geared a bit lower than the other for the windy afternoons we get on our local rails to trails.

Ah, thanks for that, now I understand. I’m pretty much the same, a bunch of bikes, mostly Singlespeeds. Always tweaking, but my Wabi Special remains first chair. Sounds like a great plan for the gearing.

To that end , as well as comments about the weight of the stock fork ,I'm already shopping for a lighter carbon fork for the bike, it should be interesting to shop for a lighter fork with more tire clearance.

I'm going to need a 144 BCD crank for it to, the stock crank gets nothing good said about it and I am building a nice set of 144 BCD rings that I want to fit the bikes I am riding. All this for a bike I have yet to ride but
I am an optimistic type guy,

My Capo arrived today, about noon. In two hours I stripped everything off it, cleaned the frame put on the new wheelset and set of Sram Red brakes. Ordering up a new seat post, seat, fork, already have two new cranks being delivered in the next day or so
a titanium bottom bracket, a set of carbon bars, some brake levers...I expect a ride on it this weekend.

If I ever see one of those in my size for sale I'm going to buy it. Very nice. I do wonder if there are metal cable housing clamps large enough for that top tube, I know it's a larger diameter than a steel frame.

The top tube is large no doubt. I am toying with the thought of drilling the top tube to route the cable inside but I'll need to hear some positive thoughts about that before I do it.

I can't envision it would be a structural issue but it is a step I'm not anxious to make right yet. Oddly, if I needed another bottle holder I'd be right there with my Makita drilling in another set of bottle mounts.

When I was looking for one of these I found three or four right away, there is still one on Facebook Market place, about $450 OBO that looks very clean. The sellers, however, don't know the size and the size sticker has been pulled off
and I had requested some basic point to point measurements with no answer yet (weeks) but that is FBM. It appears to be a 52.

Astute advice?

The CAPO is coming right along (thank you Amazon Prime!) I hope to be doing some final stuff in the next day or so and I am not a fan of the brake cable going over, or under, the top tube.

What cha think about drilling the top tube and snaking it through? It would be a ***** to snake but I run wires through boat towers so I am used to that level of frustration.

I have a hard time seeing this as a structural issue, and, yes, it may devalue the frame upon resale. At this point resale is of no concern, anyone chime in! Anyone who has done this take the lead.

I wouldn't drill the frame. I would just see if you can find some nice metal clamp on guides that fit it.

These come in black which would look fine and in three sizes. The 31.8mm might fit. The ones on my steel Wabi are 28.6.

https://www.tracksupermarket.com/bra...le-guides.html

*edit* These are cable stop guides and they come in 34.9. I'm sure they would fit. That's probably the option I'd go with.

Hey Lazy!

Thanks for the input but a super thanks for the link to the Track Supermarket. I just dropped an hour looking that place over and now want to build my own frame. That's just what I need, (god, I hope that thought goes away )

Have you ever bought anything from them?

Just a warning, the bolts and nuts on the dia-comp guides are not stainless. They all rusted on my two Wabi bikes and when I took them off there was rust under the band as well. As a result, my top tubes are scuffed up from removing the rust. I now use zip ties, they look fine and are lighter as well. Also, I live in Florida on the coast, so a salty environment.

We live in the same environment DW, if you ride A1A (like I do) the leading edge of just about everything gets corroded, Christ the zippers on my jeans turn green! Its like riding in an acid bath, my motorcycles show it the worst.

I still may drill the frame but might back out at the last instant, seems like blasphemy to do it

I like those Panasonic frames you can custom order. I wonder if they're really less than $1000. If the one in the picture had bottle cage braze ons it would be perfect.

I'm pretty sure the $1,000 listed is the deposit amount. I did the same thing until I read the fine print.

Mid build update pictures:

Waiting on a set of Carbon drops, a carbon steering stem, and a titanium bottom bracket. The All-City crank is a place holder, I have a crank coming from Canada soon.

Wheel set is a sub 15 from a Wabi Lightning

By changing from the stock Capo fork to the EC I saved a bit over a pound and I like the look. I don't know what the final weight will be yet, there are some things I can't give up, my White Ind freewheel is one, Gatorskins are another

It's a shame modern bikes don't have polished components anymore, everything is all flat black now. It's a horrible trend Your bike is proof that silver can look good on a modern bike.

Thanks Lazy, I couldn't agree more but I am a retro guy with retro tastes. I am just using the Wabi wheels until I get a set of polished wheels done up and I hope the wheels will be a focal item for the bike.

I have an interesting Swiss built crankset (Edco?) on it's way that I have high hopes for. I had a Miche Primato polished aero seat post on there for a day, looked really good, sort of a Campy clone but , sadly, it was
one of the heaviest seat posts I'd ever seen with the added complexity of a tiny, hidden hex head grub screw to release the seat carrier as well as the usual hexhead under the seat. I could envision losing the grub
screw doing a midride adjustment and having to stand up for 15 miles to get back.

I hope to have this ready to rock in a week or so, no rush though I have a couple of spare bikes!
