My wife had a Peugeot like this when she was a kid. Her parents sold it at a garage sale when she went to college. We found one on eBay and have been working to get it the way she wants it.

Nostalgia is so powerful and very often leads to pretty cool things bicycle wise.

I had a plan of building up my Grand Sprint frame with late 70's components from continental Europe only. Well, to keep it short, it will still have Japanese seatpost, pedals, freewheel and chain, it seems, because right now shipping cost of parts from France to the UK is a bit ridiculous. But I had two used Weinmann A129 Concave rims and a set of NOS Maillard hubs, so I'm building a wheelset. Today I laced the rear one, It's still loose, didn't have the time to tighten the spokes and true it yet, but should be done in a few days.So hopefully, with some bits I'm still waiting for, I should be able to do the test ride sometime next week.

Victory from the Jaws of Defeat

As I prepared to hit the road this morning, I discovered that the Vittoria Corsa G 2.0 tires were a no go at full pressure on the rims I'd swapped in on my Puch

No amount of reseating helped, and I got the dreaded "Bang" as the tire blew off and the tube burst. Enough of that, I grabbed another bike and rode on.

In the evening I decided, for the hell of it, to try the Vittorias on the Ambrosio Elite 19 Extra Durex wheelset that is original to the bike. I didn't have high hopes, because these rims are very difficult to mount tires to, notoriously so. It has always been a great struggle. Well, son of a gun, I got the first beads on with just my hands! It was snug, but I got 'em. In went the tube, and with a little help from my bead jack, they went right on. Weren't even all that difficult. I couldn't believe it. Pumped over 100psi, and they didn't budge. Still can't believe it, and am stoked because I really like these wheels. So, if you have a pair of these rims and they've given you fits, maybe try these excellent Vittorias.

Two projects

Tempo project nearly done.

NOS Fuji S12S for my spouse. Going to use a riser stem instead of this one, and have some vintage Deore XT 7 Speed shifters, also NOS. Working on these small frames makes me appreciate the bike companies that use 26" wheels for small frames.

Found the hanger extender I knew I had somewhere. It was still attached to a Campy NR that I coaxed into shifting up to 30 teeth for a short time before I went modern on my International. I did some modifications on it to get it up to Huret spec, and now it shifts into the 32 like a natural. @noglider lent me his dropout and hanger alignment tools (again!) and I laid into the front dropouts which I knew were out of whack. Next weekend I’ll check the rear, and probably the rest of the fleet for good measure.

Currently in the planning stage for a summer build project. I pulled the trigger on a vintage early-80s steel frame--obscure American builder, no spoilers yet. I have most of what I will need, but I'm going to take some time and tune/clean/polish what I have while sorting out the loose ends.

Slippery slope, I started this/that with the Eroica Merz, cleaned up, changed a couple of things, came back, cleaned and sorted another 1 plus two more good cleanups.

Then started digging, sussing and cleaning several parts, hung some of them on a build to complete it with many more cleaned and ready to use.

Then changed a few parts on another and got it good to go.

So 6 more bikes good to go, that's more than I gotten done in more than a year.

Unfortunately a meager drop in the bucket and running out of steam with so many other non-bike related projects blowing up in my face.

I have been moving things around myself. With two bikes in the build process , I realized I needed more parts. The original 27” wheels I had intended to use on my Raleigh Pro Mark V were not going to work. It appears that it needed 700c wheels . It was a disappointment as they are a really nice set. So I decided to buy a donor bike that popped up on the local CL. The bike is way too small but had a really nice set of Mavic G40 wheels laced with straight gage SS spokes to a couple of early Phil hubs that are very nice. This set off a musical wheel and tire changing marathon! The other bike I am building is a mid eighties Medici that was a generous gift from a fellow BF member that needed a few things that were also on the donor. The donor bike is actually a very nice bike but way too small for me at 20” c-c seat tube. It appears to be a custom frame of unknown origin but the speculation is that it was built by one of the Santa Barbara builders . I will pass it along once I get all the parts off it.

Of course the FW and derailleur will end up on my only touring bike , a Motobecane Grand Sprint
The whole donor bike was purchased far under what I would have paid for the wheels . The shifters will end up on the Medici putting that frame closer to a bike. Busy weekend!

Finished working on my neighbor's free GT Slipstream hybrid. Found him a new used LH crankarm and got everything cleaned up and lubed. Tried to avoid spending unnecessarily so no new tires or seat, although it could use them. I'll let Ed ride it a bit to see if he wants to spend more. The seat was especially weathered, with its Lycra cover shredded and peeling, so I cut the rest of it off and gently wire-brushed the foam to get the fabric scraps loose. I then sprayed it with clear to settle the dust and a little flat black, but I'm going to recommend a new seat first if he actually rides the thing.

I needed something to shift an 8-speed Shimano cluster, and a cheap NIB set of Claris shifters turned up in the local classifieds. Cheap enough to make me want to try them. They are not nearly as elegant or as pretty as the 9-speed Ergo brifters I was hoping to find, but they are comfortable, and they shift quite nicely, too.

Well, I was checking over a new-to-me bike and started to notice a few things out of place. It was a wall hanger and so hadn't been ridden since restoration. The seat post was 27.0 and needed to be 27.2. Luckily it hadn't been cranked down and so a 27.2 actually fit fairly easily. One disaster averted. The headset is loose and the bottom cup not completed installed (a tiny gap remains), but I'll take care of that. But then while taking a photo of the bottom bracket shell I noticed that the BB cups were reversed - the drive side on the non-drive side and vice-versa. I worried that the threads were mangled. My other Merckx has Italian threads and luckily this one does too. So easy enough to remove and flip. Always amazes me when someone doesn't get the basic stuff right.

That's an interesting rear derailleur. Had a look at different photos of it and it seems to have the cable clamp assembly integrated in one of the bolts of the front knuckle. Whilst overhauling and fixing various derailleurs over the past few years I've became mildly obsessed with building my own (with Huret Success and Suntour Cyclone being an inspiration) set of gears, so seeing something that can be fully dismantled and with unusual elements of mechanical design is fascinating.

i've been building up this 1980ish Centurion Pro Tour as an eroica/rando/comfort-focused, distance-minded ride over the last few weeks. here's a couple of pics of it in progress:

Added a Brooks B17 to the double-squish plus-size mtb.
Overhauled the wheels from a Cimarron.
The first Roma tomato appeared on the vine.
Trying to grow sunflowers from seeds, but the squirrels have other plans, diving into the planters and wasting the little sprouts because...they think I'm burying food in there?

I put cermaic tiles on the ground round my baby plants to stop squirrels digging them up, 4 usually does the trick.

Yes. I've seen photos of them before and love the idea of being able to take a derailleur completely apart for maintenance. Speaking of derailleurs, off to work on mine (600 EX SIS). Seems to have a bit of play around the mounting bolt and cage bolt, so I might have to dig up the spare one I have and install it...

Found the bike for $25 but almost everything about the drivetrain was shot, busted bar end shifter, RD, tubular wheels with dry rotting 23mm tires.. So I've spent around 10 times that so far on a budget to get it going as a city runabout, mostly facilitating my 10 year old doing it. Marketed as a "Hybrid" in 1989 but feels pretty long given its frame size.
