Just curious on this, especially with some of you veteran riders. Do you keep a collection, or just one or two you ride regularly?

I’m fairly new to cycling but overall a fitness aficionado and take to things quickly. This was a very quick “wow I love it” kind of feeling.
I bought a cheap bike from Amazon and had the LBS assemble it, that was my start and is primarily on my trainer. Ordered a 2nd hand Giant that is for the well paved trails here, and might see some Zwift action in the winter. And now I just need a tune on this 2017 Focus Mares I got for cheap, maybe some small replacements (new chain, bar tape) and it should be ready for long treks on some of the gravel and forest trail areas around…

Sounds 100% suitable…..

yet there’s still a couple bikes I eye almost everyday, and STILL want another. I’ve always been the type to like variety and to have “spares” but that might be getting to be ridiculous……

You missed my point.

The number of bikes that other people own bears no relation to the number that you should own.

My only caution would be to not buy them too soon. If you haven't been riding for long, it's hard to know what you want or need. Give yourself some time to just ride.

After recent inventory reduction (used prices are just too good right now...), I'm down to six:

Primary road racing bike
My old road racing bike for Zwift
Cross racing bike
XC racing hardtail MTB
Hipster gravel bike
Fat bike for winter

I want to buy a Transition Spur, but they're like unicorn teeth right now... maybe 2023?

they're my 'time machines' ... too many... just enough... jog remembrances of doing things I've loved to do for 5+ decades.
wonder machines, remind me that everything you do is always 'your own ride'
hoping to do this until 'that moment'
I know some will have to go - just havin a hard time choosin... LOL!
Number is not important, what is - that they cover from 1968 to now.... and every ride, regardless of vintage, is still great, time spent at the speed of Life.

How many bikes? I have:
my 29er mountain bike
my road bike
my around town bike I have the wee-ride attached to for the kids (late 90's early 2000 Trek 26in MTB)
Santana tandem for my son and I to ride on together (that counts as 1/2 a bike right?)
Old Raliegh Tandem frame (no tires, needs new shifters...... its a project bike that I don't have time for....)

So 3-4 rideable bikes and 1 project bike that has sat in the rafters in my garage for 18 months now. -throw in my wife's two bikes, my sons wee-ride co-pilot and his little bike we have 8 bikes in the garage.

You need a dedicated bike for each type of riding you do to ensure that you are enjoying your ride. I could take my 26in trek out mountain biking but the old fox shocks are shot and I can notice a major difference in quality between that bike and my 29er. I know two or three guys who have six or seven bikes because they have MTB, Road, gravel bike, road tandem, gravel tandem, recumbent, track bike, or other specialty bike in some combination

I enjoy commuting, running errands and doing fully loaded tours riding the same bike.

I think what you meant is that you need the right type of bike(s) for the type(s) of riding that you do.

Ok, I will agree with you on that Indy. I know several people who have tried to take there MTB and also use it for a gravel race or use their road bike to ride around town with the kids and hate it. A bike is a tool. using the right tool that fits your needs makes it that much more enjoyable.
Same time; if I showed up with a dedicated road, MTB, and gravel tandem; I think my wife would kill me; so my one tandem will be used for road and gravel until I can convince her that I need a triple tandem!

The correct number of bikes is always N+1, with N being the number of bikes you currently own.

Right now, there are 7 in my garage, three of them are mine;

'98 Softride for general fitness riding and Century use
Cannondale F-1000 on BMX tires for all-surface hooliganism
1976 Bridgestone Superlight 'Townie' / path-bike, and espresso runs
Schwinn Ranger single-speed MTB adaptive bike for my 13-y/o
20" Pacific MTB that belongs to my 9-y/o20"
Phat 'Daisy' beach cruiser (also the 9-y/o) for when she has friends over
Ladies' frame beach cruiser (the loaner bike)

I'd really like to add a vintage Cannondale 2.8/3.0 or a KLEIN 'fast bike'
A fixed-gear, for training,
A Fatbike, for beach excursions

Probably going to have to replace the 20" bikes next year with 24"s because, kids, ya know?

I've only had 8 in my life, 7 that I bought. The middle 2 were bungie fork Spez hybrids that I detested really, the first one was stolen and never seen again. 2 other bikes I rode were SS CCMs my brother and sister had.
All the other were heavyweight/ roadster types, what were just called "regular" bikes with upright bars. The first was a too big antique SS Rudge my dad bought from his uncle, ridden in my high school years..
One custom tour bike with a Rohloff14 and SA dyno drum front hub.
All 3 I now have are IGH with 35/ 38 mm tires. There are 4 rear wheels for the 3 bikes, there's a SA RD-3, SA XL RD-5w and Nexus 7i. I can ride them down highways all day, no problem with the bikes.
I hate helmets, derailleurs and drops, so no use for CF racers.
I hate gravel and trails, so no use for MTBs.
